Talking Sculpture with Valbjorn
Over the years, there have been many debates about whether or not miniature making can be considered an art form. Boy, do we like to label things. To be fair, it has the merit of helping us wrap our head around concepts and make sense of a very complicated world. Today is not a day for answering this question. However, we can all name people who we can call artists without a doubt. Today is a day where we celebrate that artist, artisan, craftsman and inspiring person.
Valbjorn is such a staple in the worlwide scene that I hardly need to introduce him. Famous for his insane conversion work on the Space Wolves chapter in the universe of Warhammer 40K, he did me the great honor to join me for yet another incredible podcast.
In this episode, he talks about how his parents and his youth forged the curious, sharp and open-minded person that he has become today. He eloquently discusses his inspirations and his sense of design, posing, and flow when creating figures. We dive deep into some of his best projects to date and what he learned from them. Getting to hear him talk about metal work, putties, epoxy resin, armatures, ceramics and even digital sculpting is such a joy, and the ultimate motivation. In this episode, we also discuss what makes good hair, feathers, pelts, smoke, weapons and how those general ideas apply equally well to both traditional and digital medium. This talk is artistic, it is technical, it is pure love for the craft.
