Unity Shenanigans
Unity/ironSource has recently announced a pricing change, apparently trying to apply a pay-per-impression advertisement scheme to software distribution, based on nebulous installs. The details are vague and keep changing. If the goal was to create confusion and outrage then they succeeded.
Regardless what happens next, Unity's reputation has been severely damaged, especially for indie game developers. This was either unforeseen or deemed acceptable by Unity/ironSource.
What will I do? I will continue to release Unity tutorials, at least for now. I am also investigating how to branch out to other engines. Godot is the first candidate.

I was quite relieved to read that your moving toward Gadot! When I was first trying to choose what game engine I’d work with I’d initially tried Unreal but not matter what I did it kept crashing before I could open a file. I’d liked the idea of Godot cause it’s FOSS but script was so outside the realm of the way I think that I went with Unity cause it had more support. There are many good tutorials and teachers out their but I’d say you were my tipping point for choosing Unity and I will gladly follow you into Gadot. :D
Both have their pros and cons, so let's do both!
Do you have any opinions on the Flare game engine? I've been looking at Godot and Flare now for my prototyping and indie needs, but would love a more seasoned opinion!
Flare, a 2D ARGP engine? I didn't know it existed before you brought it up.
Unity has been unprofitable for a long time, so technically are "giving more than they get" -- and need to make money, or they go under. This really only impacts "singular games making > $1 million per year" (not a company, but a single game itself). I'd like to see more money being put into Game Engines, not less. Their "ambush method" here sucks, was a mistake. Hopefully they find a way to become profitable, and continue to fund the development of Unity. I'd like to stick with Unity, and continue to give them my support.
I think we just entered a transition period, at least in education, away from Unity-by-default toward Unity-and-also.
Looking forward to learning a new engine with you!
That's the spirit! We'll make it fun and useful.
I agree and support the idea of moving to Godot. Been migrating over there for the past year anyway.
Ok, let's do it!
There are other engines I like (ie Bevy) but, Godot probably fits best with your current model. I think the Godot community would benefit greatly from your work.
Indeed, I have a list and Godot ended up on top.
Yeah! This would make me start looking at Godot. I don’t think will never leave Unity really, for personal projects or tests it would still work. That said, maybe Unreal is where it’s at professionally speaking currently.
Indeed, at least for for AAA 3D, Unreal is the obvious first choice. It is currently my second candidate.
I'm in the exact same boat, played around with Godot and it's refreshingly fun to work with.
The ship has sailed, but at least we're in the same boat!
