Projects!

I am going to do something new. For a long time I have published tutorial series, which are sequential in nature. In the near future I am going to introduce a project-based approach. This means that I will publish a project/package repository and will add to it incrementally, releasing versions.

Why Projects?

Although step-by-step tutorial series are nice to read, they are a bad format for large projects with a lot of code and refactoring them is very painful.

Projects allow nonlinear incremental progress and make it possible to quickly upgrade to new packages and Unity versions. For example, the Hex Map series was published across roughly two years. Updating this sequential series to a new Unity version is simply not possible in a reasonable amount of time, it would require an entire rewrite, which I won't do. The SRP API changes also forced me to create a whole new SRP series instead of updating the first one.

I can also work on multiple projects at the same time, releasing updates as they become available instead of having only one or two series running at once. The master would contain ongoing progress while version releases will be made available as branches.

By providing projects as packages it becomes easy to reuse content across projects, for example a noise library. You could also directly import these into your own projects, if you'd like to do that.

Can a Project be a Tutorial?

The idea is that these projects will be very well documented and explained. The primary objective is education. Besides containing clear code it should at all times be fully documented and the projects should contain extensive explanations so that anyone with the required level of experience could jump in and start investigating them.

What Kind of Projects?

A project-based approach allows me to deliver advanced stuff a like voxel system, an HDRP-like SRP, a modernized Hex Map, and more complex games.

Will Classic Tutorial Series Go Away?

Maybe, but for now I still have the rest of the Procedural Surfaces series planned, as well as another series. Existing series will remain available as they're good for beginner-level content. These I will either rewrite or upgrade to newer Unity versions at some point.

becoming a patron b/c catlike has bailed me out of so many editor tools tickets I can't even count. gl!

voxels you say?!!

Yep! That's been a longstanding topic that I have been holding back because it just doesn't fit the sequential tutorial format.

Brilliant idea! ...if you can blend your most excellent step-by-step tutorial skills into the repo/branch framework. Trick will be for you to expend the intellectual effort once and create both an educational experience and a coherent reusable maintainable package. Maybe experiment with a voice-over of a code walk-thru? Then, you could do a summary of auto speech-to-text.

That blend is exactly what I'm aiming for! Not going to do any speech-to-text though. That'd also be way slower in my case.
