Robbie's New Look
Hello everyone! Recently, we posted the August Pinup to our $5+ Backers, where we debuted Robbie's new look, which he will have in the game going forward.
To just come out and say it: Yes, Robbie has had top surgery.
I can't show anything in detail because I want this post to be public for everyone to read, and if I show him shirtless, Patreon may freak out.
But as you can see from this sprite comparison, his breasts are gone.
I'm sure some of you are confused by this decision or simply want to know why we made it.
As you may know, the scope of the game has been reduced. Cutting the free roam section from 4 in-game months to 3. Originally, we wanted Robbie's conundrum of "Will I? Won't I?" about getting top surgery to be a major part of his arc, and even potentially see him leave the game for a while as he gets surgery. But with the new scope, that doesn't fit.
We also know that for many people, Hazelnut Latte is not just a game about getting off. It is about representation and wish fulfillment. It is not very gender affirming for Robbie or for other trans men to see his tits flop around as he bounces on Isaac. So for trans men who have already had top surgery, we hope seeing Robbie like this will be a pleasant sight. And for trans men not yet transitioned who want to, we hope you see Robbie sort of in a way that you want to be seen.
We also felt like, given Robbie's strong personality, he would have found a way to get top surgery ASAP. We factored this into his new character arc, as we will retroactively explore it without needing to have Robbie hit the sidelines.
That being said! We still want to explore having a trans man character who has not had top surgery. We just felt that, for Robbie, starting the game post-op was the best move for his character.
While we are trying to limit how many hook-up characters end up in the game, we do have plans for a trans man hook-up who has not had top surgery and doesn't want to. As a tease, this will be the person you can hire to fix up Estro when you're in charge. By hook-up, we mean bangable characters with shorter story arcs, like Max, Charlene, Dave, and Finn.
We want to be as representative as possible, but we also need to limit how many characters are in our game if we ever hope to finish it one day.
So Robbie is not a stand-in for all trans men. He is a guy who happens to be trans. If you felt seen or represented by Robbie being pre-op, please don't fret; we will have a character for you down the line.

as a transmasc player who opted for getting a mass breast reduction instead of chest masculinization i do rlly like this change. it does fit his character and i like tht you're still trying to include more experiences by adding another trans person who doesn't feel the need to get top surgery:)
I'm glad you like it! Yeah it was always Robbie's intent so having him be more self actualize felt like the right move. And I hope to capture both someone who does and does not want the surgery. I was always planning on adding this other character so it felt like it fit :D

Can it not just be an in game option to have one way or the other? Are there that many lines about Robbie's chest that having the option to have one or the other in a playthrough will change the story that much?
It's sort of like asking, "Can we toggle Vera's breasts?" Robbie having top surgery is a big deal for him, and this isn't like a Skyrim mod where we can just click a toggle and nothing really changes. The game is very dialogue-heavy, and whether he does or does not have tits will change so much about him and what he says. Also, giving you the option to modify the character to that degree makes them not like people you want to romance and more like playthings. It removes their agency and would mean writing everything Robbie-related twice because now I'd need a route account for him not having surgery yet, where he is going to feel awful about his body and very insecure, like the OG Ren'Py era.
