Luffy fought one of them right at the start and barely beat him with some help from Nami. After that, Luffy took Sanji’s attacks head-on, without eating or getting any first aid to recover, and then had to deal with the other children and foot soldiers ganging up on him. He was probably at 50% HP or less, so he was likely to lose no matter how strong he is. There’s nothing wrong with doubting Luffy or not doubting him. He was at a disadvantage.
