Ippo knocked down Sendo because his punch was more compact with a shorter path than Sendo's punch, which is why it landed and knocked him on his ass. However, as you said, Sendo got back up. The compact, shorter-path punches generally do better in boxing than the huge motion punches (like Sendo's smash)
