An elbow block can do serious damage if taken by surprise. It cut the opponent power midway plus act like a counter that deals double damage.

Ippo is a very ethical fighter, and that’s one of the main reasons we root for him as the protagonist. If he weren’t he’d probably come across more like a villain than a good guy, especially since his main reason for fighting is actually pretty selfish, he simply wants to know what it means to be strong “Tsuyoi no wa nan desu ka”. Meanwhile many of his rivals have people who directly depend on them and are waiting, hoping, and even praying for their victory. So, for Ippo to stop himself in the middle of throwing a punch is completely in character, and it’s also a way of reminding us that, despite everything, he’s a good and ethical boxer.

Mashiba is actually the last name of those two siblings. His name is Ryo, and his sister's name is Kumi. He's definitely older than Ippo as Ippo is still in high school at this point (17 years old). Ippo has been younger than the majority of his opponents so far (possibly all of them). Ippo got his professional license as quickly as he could've gotten it, so, even against other rookies (except for Miyata, who's the same age as Ippo), he'll be younger than them.
