each kanji has an on-yomi and kun-yomi. basically, various ways to read that one kanji (one's based off Chinese pronounciation and other is Japanese) and sometimes it'll have more than two ways so the referee wasn't familiar with how Goku's name was pronounced. an example is 白. It can be read as Haku, Byaku, Shiro, or Shira. it then depends on how it's being used and where it is in the structure. 白紙 - haku shi - blank page 白夜 - byaku ya - midnight sun 白い - shiroi - white 白髪 - shira ga - gray hair
