you are somewhat correct, dragon ball i way more lighthearted and the seriousness picks up later, but the reason they renamed the 2'nd part of the anime to Dragon Ball Z was because of the switch in tone the series gets. another fun fact is that the change from a more comic focused story to a more serios martial arts focused one, was a push from the fans, they liked the funny bits, but for most it felt like filler between the martial arts parts, hens why he did a shift in focus on the series XD

Hunter x Hunter (1999) has a much darker vibe, you should check out a video of a comparison with 2011 ver. it has gorgeous old school animation.

I'm Brazilian, and I've watched this show from the beginning a couple of times in both Brazilian Portuguese and Japanese (both are awesome). I'm not gonna lie, it has been an incredibly enjoyable experience watching it in English with you guys. I was a little concerned at first, but this dub is so good.

Toriyama was already famous for Dr.Slump which was also a comedy so here he wanted to incorporate some fighting into his stories. It isn't till we get to the tournaments where you see the clear dynamic shifts

Fun fact and think it was said already but Toriyama was already rich and very popular before ever making DB from his previous manga "Dr. Slump." He was very popular for his humor and gags, which early DB and you even see hints of it in DBZ.. The first arc of DB that you are in now was actually only supposed to be a 1 shot manga but then it got more attention/popular and he continued the manga from there

I remember Dragon ball being on toonami too but I love the VAs and the humor so much its genuinely a feel good watch with these episodes. Now all ima think about is Peter Griffin every time Shu talks thanks to Ron lmao

The dub VA's are really good at selling comedy, but I do think the sub VA's are a good amount better with action scenes and emotional moments but that's clearly not a big deal at the moment. Like other ppl said Oolong is about 9 years old, he and puar went to the same school but Oolong eventually was kicked out after stealing the teachers underwear. So yeah he definitely needs some time behind child friendly bars

it honestly wasn't until I started watching reactors that I even considered Dragon Ball humor was shocking lol. I'm surprised you guys are as blown away as you are since Ron is coming up on his 60th birthday soon. is this crazy for a kid show? Yes this aired on Cartoon Network😂 the bath and cover scene was censored. When Yamcha looked in the window it was super blurry from steam and Yamcha screamed. and when he removed the cover the scene immediately went to him running down 😂😂😂

Dragon Ball is more light hearted from start to finish, although action picks up and it does get a little more “serious” as the plot progresses but it’s still a lighthearted fun adventure. Z is when the show takes a more serious approach but it still also maintains classic dragon ball humor at times
