Sub and dub are both good, but for Americans who grew with the dub it hits nostalgia hard, when you get to Dragon Ball Z y’all should consider the Bruce Faulconer score, the music adds a different intensity and vibe, a lot of us who watched the dub on toonami experienced it for the first time that way, definitely a cool time

"Does it get deep" Tbh, not that deep. The stakes get very high (VERY high much later on), but you won't need write shit down and you won't be needing (hardly) any tissues either. It's funny, action packed and very entertaining nonetheless.

As much as I love the dub (that's what I grew up with), having read the manga and watched the entire series in both sub/dub, the dub takes wayyyyyyy to many liberties with the story for me to recommend it to anyone for a first time watch

But this has to have the Legendary status. Toriyama is just HIM. The hands on this series are Elite the choreography the introduction the building, the comedy aspect is so chilling as well. Just takes you to those times immediately for a brief moment, it’s crazzzz can’t wait y’ll. The series is deep yll as it progresses. It may seem like a an anime but it tells us a lot about japan and tech and I love Dragon ball

Just so you know, this is an old dub and they take liberties with the dialogue like many old dubs did to "prepare" the show for western audiences. There's a lot of nostalgia for the dub though.

Fun fact since you mentioned it already but Goku translated from Japanese to Chinese literally means Wukong and comes from "Journey to the West" which is a huge story in the East and is the main inspiration for the story. You will see references to a bunch of Western inspirations from this time such as Star Wars, Terminator, Bruce Lee films, etc.. You also mentions Dragon Quest and while none of the characters are important to Dragon Ball, they will put random Dragon Quest characters in the background

I watched this back in the 90's when i was a kid and really didn't know how raunchy it was, but it's still one of the greatest animes I've seen to this day.

to all the people saying the dub is better are flat out wrong. as it was pointed out by another comment, the dub took many many liberties on changing dialogue which changes characterization and story details . EX. 1 is bulma says her name is very elegant, which is far from the truth because her name is a pun on "bloomers" and she doesnt like her name, which is why goku laughs and he doesnt even say his full name which is Son Goku. and the monster doesnt say happy meal. now this dont matter much and are funny yes but just not the from the source material and more important stuff is change later of course. so im not talking about the voice acting but the dialogue which has funny lines but are changed. Dub is just objectively worse but they can watch it however they like

thank you for not being psychos and watching it in sub lol this is the only anime that I say it is a must watch in dub. Subbed is so unbearable especially once you get to Super. I can't stand the noises they make when fighting in the the sub version lol

Michelle when you were asking if this show gets deep, everything Ron said is accurate. This show is the godfather of shonen anime. You will see elements of everything you've ever loved in a shonen anime in dragon ball.

Everyone hating on the dub but i honestly think its not that bad im a sub guy but older dubs have that charm to them where they seem to genuinely be having fun and i appreciate that.

This is so nostalgic, takes you back to Saturday morning cartoons eating cereal. Cartoon Network/Toonami. Also had the Dragon Ball CDs when I was little. Good old times. Similar to Michelle when it came to FMAB my memory is hazy when it comes to db/dbz. I watched it up to a certain point and forgot where I left off so essentially rewatching to refresh my memory. Gonna be a great journey. I feel y'all will enjoy dub more for obvious reasons. Also a more relaxed and chill reaction and the jokes are so funny in English

“Son Goku” is the Japanese translation of the Chinese “Sun Wukong”. That’s why Goku is a monkey boy with the extending power pole, because early Dragon Ball is very loosely based on the Chinese story “Journey to the West” in which Sun Wukong, the power pole, floating cloud, etc are all from.

Toriyama was also the illustrator of Chrono Trigger, IMO one of the greatest games of all time

Btw about the dub and sub debate, at the end of the day u guys do what u wanna do! U r never gonna please 100% of ur audience cuz both have their strengths. But as a person who is fluent in both English and Japanese, I loved what flexie ended up doing. She started with dub and switched to sub in the middle. The dub gives it a light, funny feeling which aligns with the beginning but, without spoiling too much, the show becomes pretty dark from the middle and thats where I personally think the Japanese actors did pretty good!

Dragon Ball was notoriously poorly preserved and has had bad home releases. If you're willing to sail the seven seas, you can find better video and Japanese audio tracks. (No, it's not just the recording is old. It's really in awful condition.) Speaking of the Japanese audio: people have a lot of nostalgia for the English dub(s). So do I. And it's got it's own cultural impact. If your audience wants you to watch that, then go for it. But you've gotta understand that DB, DBZ, and DBGT were dubbed at a very different time. The point was to serve something to American kids, fealty to the source material be damned. Think of Pokemon changing onigiri to jelly donuts. Also, Iirc, no one involved in the actual dubbing knew anything about Japanese and they didn't have access to the original audio, so transliterations are weird and pronunciations are bad. You're gonna miss puns on English words. You're gonna get lines with stuff that was just made up for the dub, and you're gonna get stuff from the Japanese left out. And you're gonna miss insert songs that they couldn't get licensed. Possible middle ground? Listen to the dub and keep the subs on at the same time. That might suck though Idk

Dragon ball is still ongoing. But its not all one show like one piece. There is dragon ball(1986-89), dragon ball z(1989-96), dragon ball GT(1996-97, but not canon) and dragon ball super (2015-18, coming back next year for new arc). But all eps from the shows are around same amount of eps of OG naruto and naruto shippuden combined (which are 720 eps, 429 canon eps) dragon ball franchise is total of 629 eps(540 canon eps, less since Dragon ball GT isnt canon) there are other shows but the ones mentioned are most important ones. In my opinion, if that clears length of dragon ball

The manga goes at a break-necking pace while the anime slows it down with filler/padding mixed with the canon episodes. It’s one of those rare anime’s where the filler doesn’t mess with the product. The slower pace actually helps with bonding with the characters.

This was the show that started my anime journey back in 1999 glad you guys are finally watching it
