For what it's worth, after it's over, there's a short 6-chapter novel that covers the events from each of 6 side characters. They had to cut a fair amount of time just given the 24-episode format, so you get a lot more development for them outside the show. Still a masterpiece though regardless!

Welcome back and a happy new year! They probably didn't ask about her illness as it would be a sensitive topic for Kaori. They seem to know it is a serious illness so they constantly go to visit to accompany and cheer her up whenever they can and wait until she is ready to tell them.
