They both got water in their lungs. That leads to pulmonary edema. Fluid is still in their lungs messing with their breathing. The inhalers send a mist of medicine to help them breathe easier. That's also why they're propped up. It can be hard to impossible to breathe lying down.

Well that’s not good; permanent lung damage or at least breathing problems? If I understand it correctly, exposure to freezing waters can screw up internal organs; especially in young children whose systems are not fully developed yet And wow how did I miss that? Some of his fingers are missing
It seems that way; it looks like his hands may have gotten frostbite as well? Or something similar? It usually goes to hands, nose, and ears the fastest
