THIS TWIST ENDING... WOAH...!! | PERFECT BLUE | MOVIE REACTION (2/2)

Really glad you enjoyed this one! I haven't watched Perfect Blue in years, and it definitely stays up there as a top psychological thriller among live action and animated films alike! Also, there are at least a few scenes from Black Swan that took inspiration from this movie, so you're spot on with your comparisons!

Okay I'm all for horror and confusing plots and stuff but god was this movie hard to follow I think it should have been a bit longer

SPOILER ALERT! I believe the real main character of the story is the one being portrayed: the molested younger sister, whose trauma led her to kill her older sister, peel her face off, and the delusion that she can take over her life. It was alluded to by the psychiatrist in the scene. It explains why "Mima" kept questioning who she is, why she would find blogs in her website she didn't write. I think Rumi is what the little sister looked like. And "Mima" was the older sister. The climax where Rumi was chasing Mima, was the little sister recalling how she killed her older sister, in the attempt to "take over" her life. Maybe it's the older sister's blogs, interacting with her fans. The ones saying she's not Mima, could be the younger sister's subconscious telling her she's hallucinating all this. Otherwise, why highlight the scene of the detective and psychiatrist talking? The night club scene could be the rape that the little sister experienced that traumatized her, that's why it's so vivid during the taping.

It's more or less commonly accepted that Black Swan actually copied Perfect Blue. So you were right seeing similarities. There were also similarities with another movie (edit:Requiem for a Dream) from the same director as Black Swan, a director which (if my memory is right) admitted seeing Perfect Blue in the late 90s and loving it.

Sadly the director who did this movie died way too soon. This Movie here was his first Director Job (except for 1 episode of the 90s Jojo Version). It's based on a book. He died 12 years after this movie (with 46 years old) because of pancreatic cancer and could only direct 4 movies and 1 series in those 12 years. But all of his works are great and I would love to see reactions for those too. The Movies are Millenium Actress, Paprika and Tokyo Godfathers and the series is Paranoia Agent.

If you watch this a second time you will notice a lot of small hints and nods to what is really going on. For example: The bloody clothes in the closet. Those were real. Rumi did that, and since she hid them in her closet, and having an exact replica of the room, a mix up happened and Mima found it momentarily thinking she might have done it. It was real but is only explainable after the end.

I'm assuming the famous movie about 'descent into drug world' mentioned in part 1 was Requiem for a Dream, and now a Black Swan mention in part 2. Both directed by Darren Aronofsky who took much inspiration from Satoshi Kon, including the bathtub scene here in Perfect Blue which he used in Requiem.

Dude! Luke I love your reaction of something like this. Definitely do more psychological and thriller movies or series! I cannot believe how I was enjoying the whole way through your reaction on this one!

I first saw this movie back in...2000(ish) and bought it only because the back of the DVD said something about this being a blend of Hitchcock meets Walt Disney, and I thought "What? Must buy this." And I loved every second of it. I'm so glad you watched one of the greatest anime movies EVER. Now you need to watch the Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood live action movies and Rurouni Kenshin live action movies.

Welcome to the mindbending genre Luke! "Mindf""k" as its also known as for the more crass. Tons of great options for series & movies in this vain. The comments have already thrown several amazing suggestions that help to satisfy that want for warped perspective or twisted logic to really get your head spinning.

Satoshi Kon was taken from us too soon. It’s sad we only got four movies and a series from him before his death at 46.

I can't believe Rumi did this after retiring from being a demon hunter

If he liked perfect blue he would like Welcome to the NHK and Serial Experiments Lain imo.

Paprika next? Need more Satoshi Kon!
