There will be some actual explanation about the sacrifice ritual next episode... but you've probably already watched that by the time this vid went up so... we'll talk about it in the next comments section, I guess?

TheErisianMonk · December 19, 2024

You're not required to "why the sacrifice." You only need "a sacrifice is 'needed,'" and it should piss you off. When you pay attention to what Hayase says, it's clear that the "kill one girl each year" is oppression by one tribe on another. Hayase keeps dendenying that the bear god, Oniguma, doesn't exist, yet Oniguma is the reason for the yearly sacrifice.

T
TheErisianMonk · December 19, 2024

8:00 Why would they care who he is? All they wanted was a child sacrifice. He doesn't matter in any way at this point. 18:30 Holy crap. I forgot how EPIC this got!!! I got instant hype tears from seeing the Wolf's head instantly heal, with that "fuck you" look on its face. My goodness. So...why has it been so damn long since I watched this?!?!?

R
Recall · December 17, 2024

i feel that the ritual is pretty clear in how it goes. Every time they need a sacrifice they go to one of the nearby villages to get a young girl. They then drug the girl and sacrifice her as food to they're god who the knew was a bear in form but haven't seen it or their tribe said it was a bear to convince the other villages. Then they leave it until the next time.

This would make sense in why they just thought as the bear as a legend but when they see the bear they presume it actually is the said god.
Also the main girl sacrificing march just didn't notice fu until the gate had already closed.

The bear is still alive. You could see its breath steaming in the air. The transition from midday when the fight started to sunset at the end shows that they were fighting for a while. The wolf kept reviving no problem, but the bear got worn down over time. Nickle and dimed to exhaustion.

A
Aaren YASS · December 23, 2024

Well, thought that was the heat from the wound evaporating. It's more common than you think in gorey anime, definitely doesn't always mean something is alive. Just warm.

The OP you are thinking of is from Serial Experiments Lain. She had to free march before being at the ritual site because it is still guarded. The entrance would be closed and march would simply die before the guards left. They chose to leave because the bear actually showed up.

C
CameraIsMe · December 16, 2024

The reason why they sacrifice the children, even though they didn’t actually believe that there was anything to sacrifice them to, is to keep control over the people.

G
GhostSushi · December 15, 2024

your part right for the sacrifice , its an old tradition , they offering a child to their god (they dont know if he's real and dont know its a giant bear) and return later like weeks after and taking the bones for the family , when she saw the boy she didn't recognize him and when she recognize him ( cause he was with march in the forest when she captured her ) its was too late , and for the fact that the boy have the bandage with blood its because when he transform he stay in the same state as the one he transform into so because of the fact the boy was injured and had the rope on him he alwais have the injuries with the bandage and the rope , i think he transform with the injury then heal so the bandage always have blood .

1:30 'I am falling. I am fading. Help me to breathe...' And Luke don't seem to understand... A shame he seemed

S
Some0neElse · December 15, 2024

I dont think the sacrifice thing needed explanation though. It is very much a signature thing for many ancient societies. They pick up someone to be an offering to w/e gods they believe in and do the sacrifice...

I came here to say Duvet but everyone else already said it. The Serial Experiment Lain OP is really good.

25:00 It was creepy, I'm not gonna lie 😂 I didn't have any problems with the sacrifice ritual, everything is clear and crisp, similar to what tribes in South America did a few hundred years ago. And honestly speaking, the appearance of the characters in this anime is a bit reminiscent of the indigenous people of South America 27:00 In the traditions of my people, there is one day a year when we honor our dead relatives. There are different moments, but there is also something like a sacrifice, we pour alcohol for the deceased, it has to stand on the table for a while (maybe 10 minutes or one night) and then you can drink it because it is believed that the soul of the dead has received the offering. I don't know if this situation is similar, because I am European and they are similar to South Americans, but maybe the ritual itself is important to them, they have performed it, and it doesn't matter what happened next

S
Some0neElse · December 15, 2024

also if some immortal guy/wolf comes and saves the would be sacrifice you wouldnt question it... that sacrifice is now a holy person :D

Duvet - Boa? I didn't think it could but maybe?

d
dartcp · December 15, 2024

the sacrifice was roughly explained in the last episode. So we look for the victim with the help of a "fortune teller" and the victim is brought to an altar in the mountains for the bear and a year later we hollow out the bones and bring them to the family... and yes, great great honor for them for the family that their child was chosen yadda yadda yadda.... ps: even if you don't believe that the bear is real beforehand, well, ritual sacrifice to gods and that's what used to happen in our world

W
WhiteDragon6 · December 15, 2024

O

D
Dj · December 15, 2024

The female leader did say last episode after they leave the sacrifice there, they will return a month later or something to collect the remains and give it back to the parents, as it was the traditional ritual since back then Fushi just ruined that lol

F
FullHeart · December 15, 2024

So here's the worst part IMO: They didnt just not explain the sacrifice; they didn't even believe in it. The bear was, supposedly, the deity they were sacrificing it to, but they admitted by name they didn't even think it existed. They had a fort around the altar the bear couldn't fit into (it smashed the walls fitting through the gate), and all the bones were on the altar, meaning the last sacrifice definitely wasn't eaten by a large creature like that. They've just been tying girls down for presumably years and letting them starve to death on an altar to a god they didn't believe in. For no reason. Maybe just control.

A
Amadhe · December 15, 2024

It is pretty much implied that Yanome wants to prevent Ninnanah from developing civilization so they can continue recovering “tribute” from them I think.

G
GodKingEscanor · December 15, 2024

26:10 cults sacrificing people to a greater being even happens in real life so why is it so hard for you to accept it in anime?

E
Exxyo · December 14, 2024

Hey Luke, quick explaination, the sacrifice thing will be explained at some point (the reason behind it), the bear is not dead, he got tired because he was dealing with an inmortal all day and was desperate to get rid of him and of course blood loss, the thing that was happening to Fushi (aka the wolf) I'm not sure if it's explained later I don't remember, but have in mind that he seeks for stimulations, so he must have a way to percieve them, he looked sad when he was biting the bear probably because he was feeling his pain.

Y
Yero19 · December 14, 2024

I'm so glad you're enjoying the anime, many of your questions will be answered in the next episodes. Just to say that the Ninannah, the March and Parona tribe, along with other small tribes are controlled by the Yanome, the tribe of Hayase the short-haired woman, every so often they choose a tribe at random to sacrifice one of their children to Oniguma, the great spirit of the forest represented by the giant white bear, the Yanome don't really believe and only use the sacrifice to keep control of the tribes, they leave the sacrifice tied and drugged on the altar to die of starvation and when they return with a new one they collect the remains and take them to the village they came from saying that the great Oniguma took the sacrifice. This is the first time the Yanome see Oniguma that's why they reacted so surprised.

K
Kenra · December 14, 2024

Animals can die by stress, maybe it had too much stress during the battle plus blood loss

Z
Zer0 · December 14, 2024

21:52 Ok so. Human sacrifices did happen. The god or gods they were sacrificed to weren't real. So why should this be any different? You sacrifice someone to please the gods for a good harvest or not to feel their wraith.

Z
Zer0 · December 14, 2024

17:31 The bear

P
Pilligrim Ilyas · December 14, 2024

The reason why some of them believe in the bear and some not is pretty simple. As you've seen before they're constantly mentioning Ninannah and Yanome. Basically it's two tribes and their territories, Yanome (Evil woman with hairy guys) being dominant one and Ninannah (everyone from village) under them. And Ninannah people do believe in bear but Yanome don't. About sacrifices. It's pretty simple too. They either believe that by giving sacrifices they'll be prospering or by not giving sacrifices they're gonna be doomed. Which is a pretty common thing for primitive tribes. We had the same for centuries before with Aztecs, Greeks and etc, so I have no idea why such concept was so confusing to you

N

M

The opening you sang is from Lain

S
Sinbad_Deity · December 14, 2024

Yes, they are sacrificing people to the bear, I thought that much was obvious, and they've been sacrificing people for generations, so they are just accustom to tradition, not everyone would've saw the bear. It's become a folktale of sorts. March ruined the plan by running off by herself. Also the bear obviously died to blood loss. Also if they didn't believe in it, they wouldn't follow it, her being shocked that it's actually real, is how most religious people will act if they saw god.

R
Richard · December 14, 2024

Here's what you missed. The people doing the sacrifices are a different tribe to ones being sacrificed. It's more about controlling a subjugated people with superstition than something they believe in themselves.

S
Sinbad_Deity · December 14, 2024

Why would mentioning the monster while it's infront of you make a difference?

A
Aishie Yuri · December 14, 2024

you ask why the girl intervene and help march escape instead of replacing the bones after saving her on the alter, well, in the context of the moment, march actualy tried to run off by herself, thus, making the plan of replacing bones AFTER they would have left march on the alter, kind of failed, since the big girl didnt knew what would happen the moment march take the action to run/escape by herself, it make sens that the big girl intervene to give march a bigger opening of escape considering the incertainty of the moment! enjoy!

S
Solar · December 14, 2024

you might be thinking of the opening for serial Experiments Lain Edit: looking through the comments lots of people have already named this opening, so to make sure I'm not just repeating what others said I'll just add that I'm enjoying these reactions, and this show is definitely underrated, It has a fantastic way of capturing your curiosity, and wanting to know where the story will go. another underrated show I think deserves more recognition is blood blockade battlefront. Also don't worry the show will answer more questions about the sacrifice and the ritual. you may not be satisfied with the explanations, but it will add more context around their behavior.

R
RandomTitanGuy · December 14, 2024

This is my interpretation. Someone from the area probably witnessed the bear however long ago and the people started seeing it as some "god" or ill omen so somewhere along the line the tradition of human sacrifices came into the picture. Normally in traditional sacrifice it's done to prevent the spirit from attacking you (contextually). They have probably been doing it for so long many people don't remember the origin or people just straight up don't believe but just do it "Because that's what we always do". They leave the offering and leave and just come back in a year to clean up and leave a new offering, business as usual.

Next weeks 2 pisodes will be an interesting pair, can't wait already They pick the children from the villaes to be sacrificed to the Oniguma aka the big bear which was supposed to be believed to be a spirit bear that brings peace and prosperity to the land if given a yearly sacrifice. 18:55 thats the wolf from th beginning 21:45 Yes it was mentioned last episode and this episode as well. Its similar to cultists making a sacrifice to god or another spiritual being so it having a physical form still would be surprising 27:20 there’s no way to know how they actually do the sacrifice since they pick different villages every year and it’s done in the fort where none of the villagers go to. She probably wanted to make it look like something attacked her in the Forster and died after freeing march
