If he shoots Hartmann it could also result in him pulling the trigger on Dieter

Tenma was searching his stuff because he had no lead where he would have taken Dieter

I love how despite all the insane detail that went into the depiction of 80s/90s Germany, there are some obvious (but cute and charming) inaccuracies. Luke already mentioned the blue traffic lights in a previous episode. Another example would be the very old-fashioned names. Looks like someone found a book about german names from the early 1900s. Almost no kid that was born after ~1970 would be named Dieter, Günther, Otto or Inge(borg) anymore. Names like these would just scream "bully me!". Almost as cruel as naming your child Adolf in the mid/late 50s, like the guy from episodes 3&4. Speaking of Adolf Junkers - what's with all those doors that can easily be opened from the outside without a key? That's not how doors usually work. But the real question is, why would you need a lock picker in this world? It's all lies! Junkers was obviously just a professional doorknob twister! And never told anyone. ;p

I in fact know 5 people called Otto or Dieter that were born after 1970, and one of the Dieters even after 1990, it's obviously not common but i'm pretty sure you could even nowadays still find quite young examples for all of those classic German names except Adolf(as far as i know that's straight up illegal since several decades by now) somewhere in Germany.

The way it's explained in this episode, Johan isn't a "super soldier." The project was designed to create super soldiers but there's no indication it worked. Johan is a master manipulator. From this episode it's unclear if he was born that way or if he had some special talent that was developed at Kinderheim 511. That's the way I see it. Let's see if something else turns up over the next 60+ episodes.

Monogatari as patreon exclusive would be so much fun

I think it's completely fair to say Monster doesn't feel like an anime. In part, it's because of the types of anime you've mostly watched, but I think generally speaking most popular anime lean into a lot more tropes than Monster. The characters mostly behave fairly realistically. There aren't crazy powerups and epic music swells as Tenma swoops in and headshots all the villains. It's just a fairly grounded suspense mystery show. Even the art style of the characters is rarely exaggerated in anyway. They look more like animated illustrations of humans rather than the more stylized versions you usually get of larger eyes and tiny noses or mouths.

Like you said, one of the things that makes Monster so unique is the slow burn suspenseful storytelling and subtle character work. I think it's down to the way most modern anime are serialized, most often in seasons of 12 episodes of 24 minutes each, with no guarantee of continuation. Taking out 3 minutes for the opening and ending, you basically get 4 hours to tell the entire story. And that extends to the manga that a lot of these things are based on too, which are usually published in monthly magazines now where you get one chapter per month and no guarantee of renewal if the series doesn't do well. That makes it difficult to leave extended segments of dead air in anime or slow chapters of manga, the pacing needs to be quick. Monster being one 74 episode block with no season breaks makes it possible to take the time for slower sections and have a lot more room to be considered with the pacing. The endings will make sense eventually! You'll know when you get there.

Mmm yeah, 511 Kinderheim, definitely not based on Geschlossener Jugendwerkhof Torgau

thoose end slides really gives me a brothers Grimm vibe, which makes sense since the story happens in germany.
