Poor Trunks was just in the wrong place at the wrong time in a meta sense. The rage and anger was, as you said, totally the fault of Toei's abuse of peoples' nostalgia and hype for Vegito and the general nerfing of the earrings. It honestly felt pointless to do and, given how Goku was showing that Zamasu could be fought to a standstill WITHOUT fusion, I personally feel that it would have been better had they not involved Vegito at all and Vegeta and Goku somehow cooperate instead. That way we get a good fight, there isn't any needless retcon, Vegito stays as awesome (and as permanent) in our happy little heads, and - most importantly - Trunks gets his proper chance in the spotlight without having to bear the blunt of peoples' anger.
