The internet is... Good?

The internet can still be... Good?

I am as stunned as you are.

Ok, so here is what happened:

Patreon made their own social media thing, called Quips. I am as jaded as the rest of you, but my profession requires me to stake out a space on all the new platforms so at least my handle doesn't get gobbled up by somebody who might bring shame to my good name, like a Republican or somebody who publicly praises the taste of Marmite.

What typically happens is I hang out on each new platform long enough to make a couple posts, hit 'like' or whatever on any that catch my eye, follow a handful of familiar faces, and then I forget it ever existed.

What happened on Quips is that I was seeing a lot of interesting posts. Like. I guess due to the nature of being hosted on Patreon, the users and creators are all people who are already here to be involved with creative works, so that's what's being shared and that's what people are being excited about. And on top of that, Quips was auto-suggesting a ton of brand new creators to me, people and entities that had never crossed my internet path before even though a lot of them are actually really well established and have existed for years if not more than a decade already???

One such account that burst into my feed was Lingthusiasm, the podcast for people enthusiastic about linguistics. We mutually hit 'like' and left a note or two on a couple of our respective posts, but then they shared this banger:

So, obviously I had to draw it.

AND THAT'S HOW I MADE INTERNET FRIENDS WITH LINGTHUSIASM'S ACCOUNT-RUNNER GRETCHEN McCULLOCH. But don't take my word for it, go watch her recount this tale in her own words:

Chatting with this funny, creative person naturally led me to look up her co-hosted podcast and then absolutely devouring her book, BECAUSE INTERNET (affiliate link), in, like, 48 hours.

Like. The whole experience was like the good old days of Internet! When people were just makin' goofs and sharing cool shit and being excited about it together. And it's not unique to my bumping into Gretchen on there- this kind of open, friendly, creative, collaborative vibe is just baked in to the infrastructure of Quips right now?

I've been posting my photos and bullshit pretty much daily and urging all the artists in my studio to get on this-- and that was months before Patreon reached out to produce this video for Quip's public launch. So, like, yeah, technically the video is #SponCon but I was already saying all of this stuff for free in my real life anyway, I'm literally just repeating myself verbatim but now I'm getting a one-time compensation for saying it again on video, sooooooo ¯\(ツ)/¯

And don't get me wrong, there's bugs that need to get worked on and basic features that really do need to be incorporated (Alt text for images, please!), and I knoooooooow the culture of each new social media platform evolves over time. But:

But, it's just really nice right now.

I'm genuinely enjoying it, as a creator and a patron.

More Internet like this, please!

I now love Quips too because honestly seeing your exchanges with Lingthusiasm.com has brought me so much joy. "Wait. Erika Moen knows Lingthusiasm? Lingthusiasm knows Erika Moen?? And I can see cute exchanges that they're sharing??? omgomgomg!" *squee face*

That's me when I learn two artists I like are friends irl, that exact reaction. Sometimes it's just what they retumblr'd one of their drawings 15 years ago.

I’m curious about Quips but the link in your post just opens your Patreon page again, and I can’t find it on the App Store. How does one find / join Quips?

E
Erika Moen · April 30, 2026

Huh, that is super weird and sounds like a glitch on Patreon’s end :-/ You don’t need to download anything extra to have access to Quips, it *should* be included in your current account. Since my links aren’t working for you, I suggest googling some combination of words like “What is Patreon Quips” or “How to access Patreon Quips”, something like that. Sorry for the extra hassle!

Yay! I've followed the lingthusiasm podcast for a long time, I learned about it on a gay first date that didn't go anywhere. Which seems thematically tied to OJST!

Quips lover here. I have also known of you through Quips, and also Lingthusiasm (and I saw all that exchange and enjoyed it by the way) and a bunch more of creative people I'm following for free because at the moment I can't really follow everyone I like as a paying patron. My wallet has yet to upgrade according to my tastes. Every comment I find here be it on paid or free tiers is just so... nice. I'm honestly loving it. I don't know why but 90% of the Quips that appear in my feed result in a follow either free or paid. Can't really complain just because creative people sharing stuff and being nice and otherpeople being nice back? Yes, please, and keep it coming 💕 Also your cat is 100% cat and your accepting "we're done" is very relatable. Edit: I think that the secret is somehow people showing themselves. And we somehow feel connection and we relate. Or want to show support one way or the other. And we are managing to do it while being nice and fun. Hard do beat.

Yay, I recognize your icon too! And I'm following a lot more creators free than I used to be, definitely no hard feelings if you're just there for the free episodes, that's great too!

Oh that 'please don't stuff your tail into my eyes' reaction as a cat is hopping down; I know it so well <3

I feel like Quips feels like a "friendly" internet again. Maybe because most people here are either willing to create things or to pay for things that other people create--so that weeds out a BUNCH of people. Also, I "met you" via Quips and even though I'm still just a free member, I enjoy seeing your stuff! :)

E
Erika Moen · April 28, 2026

Bwah, thank you so much! ❤️❤️❤️ I was soooooo glad when Patreon started allowing free membership and now especially Quips, since those two features let me do what I do best: old school blogging about all my bullshit. I just want a place where I can share my eclectic STUFF in one place with people who are interested, whether they can pay or not. I am genuinely stoked to have people follow for free, and when I’ve got more vulnerable/private work to share, that’s the stuff I put behind a paywall for people who are more invested than the casual observer. But both are important to me!!
