Second things second:
Presented with this rare opportunity to spend face-to-face time with a highly sought-after, acclaimed actress and author on tour promoting her debut graphic novel, the intelligent choice would be to draw her fanart of it. This would be the natural thing to do, not only since the Ancient Greek-inspired illustrations by Rowan MacColl are already 1000% My Jam (as evidenced by the fact I've already made and shared that kind of art here before), but it would also probably be the most appreciated gift from the recipient's point of view.
OR.
Or I could draw her some completely irrelevant fanart of the minor character she played only a handful of times on a TV show that went off the air six years ago because I am currently fucking obsessed and just re-watched the entire five season run of it about a month ago.
Yes, I'm talking about The Magicians.
OBVIOUSLY I was going to draw more The Magicians fanart!!!! Like that's even a choice?!
If it's been a while since you've had your own The Magicians re-watch, let me remind you that Felicia Day played the charmingly amoral, dragon-obsessed, lost-and-then-found Brakebills student, Poppy Kline!
Because I wanted to give her something physical, I decided I'd bust out my watercolors for the first time in months! But, even though I'd be using traditional media for the final product, I still did my sketching digitally in Clip Studio because it's just faster for my revisions.
Once I was happy enough with my lines, I printed them out and then used carbon paper to transfer them onto my block of professional quality watercolor paper that I got for $2 at a secondhand shop!
Then, I painted!
I used colored pencil for the line work.
As ever, I wish I could change a bunch of things and/or knew how to edit better in Photoshop but ¯\(ツ)/¯
If you're in the Beaverton area, come see us talk on March 20th!

Oh, nice! I'd completely missed the existence of The Magicians, so I appreciate you bringing it up. ☺️
Gosh I wish I could make that talk, it sounds awesome!
Truly, if ONLY I could make it West Coast... I wouldn't miss it!
I hope she loves it! I'm a big fan, the energy she brings to her roles is very me-coded.
I'm sure she'll love it, maybe even especially because it's a character that only appears in a few eps.
Years and years ago I saw her at an event in SF and asked her what superhero she'd want to play if given the opportunity, and she answered, almost before I'd even finished asking, "Doreen Green the Unbeatable Squirrel Girl." I still wish somebody woulda greenlit that.
Oh damn what impeccable casting! That would be so good!
Poppy Kline! She's going to love that!
