Bike Bag Mend
Ok, I'm about to be offline for the next week in Alaska! I have literally twenty minutes until my ride to the airport comes to pick me up so here is a VERY FAST and unaesthetic post about my bike bag mend!
The Damage
I've had these saddlebags for, like, easily 15 years, I think. They are not waterproof so during the rainy season I have to wrap all my stuff in plastic bags before I put them in my saddlebags, haha.
Aaaaaaaaaand....
The Fix
I went with bright pink floss because I wanted to really emphasize that these bags are used and reused, they've gone through adventures (and multiple car hits)
I'm not happy with those small weaving patches, I'll probably go over them again to make them more solidly pink blocks.
The other GIANT tear could only be fixed in a way that hid the stitches from the outside, so really there's more mending at play here but you can't tell unless you're looking inside the bag.

Phew, and I finished this post before my ride to the airport got here! Minutes to spare! Oh, dude, I always forget that that friend is a patron and sees these updates until he mentions something I wrote in a locked entry and then I'm like "How do you know about that???" and he's like "Erika." I had a set of orange saddle bags in my biking days. I think that was what the elderly lady who came across 4 lanes of traffic to put me on the hood of her car was aiming for? Do you know what the first thing the people who have put me on their hoods do (n=2)? Slam on the brakes and off I fly! I've had the life of a rodeo clown . Actually that sounds like more fun!
I wonder what medical plan rodeo clowns use?
I love the pink! Also have you ever tried using ScotchGuard to waterproof(ish) your bags? I used to go canoe camping with my dad every summer, and that generally helped our gear end up less soggy. Not like “you can throw it in the river” waterproof, but at least “it can get some splashes on it from paddling and not end up with everything wet inside,” haha. Have a great trip!!
I second the Scotchguard recommendation! When I made my purse I sprayed the heck out of it after it was done, and give it a spray every once in a while. It's helped my purse resist the worst of getting caught in the rain!
