Monthly Round-up (August 2026)

Well, that’s August done, so here I am again with another of these monthly recaps.

NEW RELEASES

Much to my disappointment, I didn’t actually have anything new to release in August (despite being rather busy with the designs for the next pdf).

Now, I know I’m under no obligation to release new material each and every month – but it is something I consciously aim for… and, like I say, it always feels a little disappointing when I fail at that.

That being said, I did throw a quick YouTube short together (in the hope that it might send some more traffic to the sci-fi stuff that I do)…

...but it didn’t really have any noticeable impact.

And while I didn’t plan it this way (I’m not that smart), it seems that there’s a new Necromunda edition out right now… one that folks are complaining doesn’t contain nearly enough terrain.

So, if you know someone that could do with some sci-fi terrain to fill out their Necromunda tables… then the barricades and cargo containers are relatively quick ways of helping them do just that.

* * * * *

Last month I also mentioned that I was having some issues with a company called ‘We Are Era Music BV’ - who were copyright claiming some of my videos (even though I was using correctly attributed creative commons music by Kevin MacLeod).

Thankfully all of that is sorted out now, and all the videos they claimed have been released…

...but it still baffles me that ‘We Are Era Music BV’ are allowed to do this time and time again, and to a multitude of different YouTube channels… and continue to get away with it (you know, seeing as how YouTube claim to take the misuse of their copyright claim system very seriously).

ON THE WORKBENCH

Anyway, another thing I mentioned last time was the new (somewhat elvish themed) buildings that I’d started work on.

Now, the plan was to get those out in August – but I’ve gone back and forth with some of the artwork, and developed more ideas as things have progressed… and so I think it will now be two videos.

The first will be just the basic buildings themselves, and the second will be additional detail pieces (like spires, dormer windows, balconies, etc.).

So, with that in mind – here’s an example of the smallest basic building that you can make (perhaps some kind of little workshop)…

...and here’s how the pdf is looking so far:

But there’s still a few more things that I need to add (and I have a few other things going on next month that’ll slow me down a bit) – but I should get at least one of these videos/pdfs out in September (fingers crossed).

ON THE PAINTING DESK

The unpainted models that I shared a picture of in the last newsletter did, in fact, get painted.

Plus, as you can see, there’s also another in there too, and this one was from a sprue of ‘satyr brutes’ that I picked up from ebay (I think). However, these models do come naked – so I thought I’d try my hand at sculpting a loincloth over the top of one of them…

...and I’m pretty happy with how it turned out (as I mostly just use greenstuff for filling gaps and the like – so this isn’t something I have much experience in).

And, seeing as how I’m already talking about miniatures, something else I did (for the first time) was attend one of those ‘warboot’ things.

Now, if you’re unfamiliar with the term – in my neck of the woods there are often ‘car boot sales’ (often referred to as a ‘carboot’)… which is similar to a garage sale I suppose – but held at a particular site (a large car park or a field for example). Lots of folks turn up to these, and sell stuff out of their car boot (i.e. trunk) or the back of a van (giving it more of a market vibe).

Anyway, a Warboot is obviously a play on Carboot… (as most of the stuff they sell at these events are miniatures and Wargames/Warhammer related) and it seems that a bunch of them are popping up in my area at the moment.

And, while I didn’t get any pictures of the event itself – here is a picture of what I picked up (for just under £20).

Here you can see a squad of metal space marine scouts from 1997 (cost £10), a 1995 marauder dark elf (50p), nine of the very first plastic skaven modles GW ever made (£8), and a newer space marine accessory sprue with two pieces missing (50p).

Obviously, I’ve then had to strip some of these so that I can repaint them…

...and I think I’m going to write a series of blog posts about the process (and the whole ‘warboot’ thing) – as I may turn this into a bit of an ongoing project… one where I try to build a small army (or collect the models to run a D&D adventure) just from the models I can find at these events. I think that would be a fun thing to do :)

ON THE TABLETOP

Speaking of the blog, I did manage to play through a solo game using a bunch of my terrain last weekend… and I’ve been talking about that a bit more over on said blog.

However, I did split it up into several posts – so I’ll just link them all here:

1. The preamble

2. The set-up

3. The rules

4. The bat-rep

And, while it does mix in a bunch of different ideas from several games, I think it made for an interesting (and reasonably unpredictable) scenario.

WRAPPING THINGS UP

And, that’s all I have for this one.

So, while I didn’t manage to get a new video out (once again, apologies for that), I did achieve my other two goals of painting up a bunch of mini’s in order to play a solo game.

With any luck I’ll have more stuff to share next time – but for now, here’s hoping you also squeezed in some hobby projects in August… and let’s hope the new buildings will be worth the wait.

Me either. His ‘main’ you tube channel was mentioned making me think this must have been posted on a different one, that I must not be subscribed to 🤔

I meant 'main' as opposed to the 'shorts' feed... plus I also posted the video in a few other places (Instagram and TikTok for example). But yeah - YouTube isn't particularly great at showing/recommending things that you might actually want to see :(

I don't recall seeing the cargo container short. Your loincloth sculpt looks good and quite a haul at Warboot.

Thanks... and yeah, there's another of these events this coming weekend at a different venue - so I might see if I can get to that one as well (as it looks to be around twice the size of the last one).
