Excellent discussion. Thank you!
Nope, won't work... but thanks for the germ of an idea that powered a long walk... ChatGPT is based on perceptrons - or an analogy to eye neurons - they are non-linear filters that can't create information but can recombine it in various ways. So, what it will do is take JRR's descriptions and try and match them against its information base. What you're looking for is something that can increase that information base and make things up - imagine if these AIs could create info, then they'd be totally useless for image recognition or face tracking because they'd just make stuff up, and that would be a problem. Best to look at ChatGPT as a non-linear search engine. You would probably laugh at the idea of putting JRRs descriptions into Google and seeing what you get, yet both ChatGPT and Google are based on the same information base. If you want creativity in your AI then try genetic algorithms, because after all, you are the result of one... and the algorithm that created you once thought (a billion years ago) that perceptrons were a good idea too and incorporated them into an evolving creature as eyes... The original text on this is John Holland's 'Adaptation in Natural and Artificial Systems', and to me is the ultimate answer to John Von Neumann's questions around self replicating machines and how they might evolve... Anyways, thanks for the stroll down memory lane...
Yep, I am one of those 75 year olds who had lots of traditional training but have totally embraced digital for now. Thanks for all your excellent teaching!
So totally agree with your optimism and enthusiasm! I have loved computers since 1981 and see that with each development, these tools only get better! I used them as a psychologist, a researcher, and an accountant. Now as an artist who learned to use oils, pastels, watercolor, clay, and metalwork, I love digital painting on the IPad and I can only say to AI..."Bring it on!"
