mammal Vol.2 Is Now in Its Third Printing
mammal Vol.2, my collection of kinbaku photography, has been selling extremely well, and I have just ordered another reprint. This is already the third printing. I’m truly grateful.
Recently, alongside my work on the next issue of Roca, I have been immersing myself in writings and archival materials by Norio Sugiura and Katsuya Kasei. Partly under their influence, I rewrote the afterword to mammal Vol.2 as follows.
Afterword to mammal Vol.2
This book brings together photographs I took with Ren between June 2025 and April 2026.
Almost all of the outfits she wears in these photographs belong to Ren herself, who is also a collector of fetish clothing.
Before meeting Ren, I was strongly conscious of what might be called “traditional kinbaku photography,” and I worked almost exclusively with everyday clothing or Japanese dress. Since I began photographing with her, however, I feel that I, too, have gradually awakened to a somewhat different kind of fetishism.
In kinbaku photography, great importance is often placed on the context surrounding an image and the story it invites the viewer to imagine. Photographs featuring fetish clothing, by contrast, create a certain distance from context and narrative, directing the viewer’s gaze instead toward the bound body itself. For me, this was a new and stimulating experience.
The photographs in the first half of this book, like those in the previous volume, mammal #1, were taken at HBC Photo Studio in Akasaka. The studio was run by Hinako, a researcher of fetishism. For roughly two and a half years, until its much-lamented closure at the end of 2025, it served as the base of my photographic practice, and I used it almost every week.
After the studio closed, I continued photographing while searching for ordinary rental studios and other suitable locations. The photographs in the second half of this book were taken in several of the places I discovered during that process.
Finally, I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude to Ren, who created this book together with me, and to Hinako, who supported my work for so many years.
