Trying to Find the Beauty of Misery

The other day, I attended a talk event by Norio Sugiura. The event traced the history of his career, from its beginnings to the present day, alongside many of his photographs. Listening to the stories behind the work and seeing those beautiful images from different periods of his life left me once again with a deep sense of admiration.

What especially stayed with me was his observation that the “beauty of misery” has largely disappeared from contemporary kinbaku expression.

The “beauty of misery” is one of the themes I want to pursue in my own work as well. But at the same time, I also feel how difficult it is to achieve today, for many different reasons.

There are several things that make this kind of expression difficult, and I’d like to write more about them in the next issue of ROCA. But one of those reasons, I think, is the problem of “always tying too carefully.”

Many riggers, myself included, tend to show off their technical skill without even realizing it. We don’t want other riggers or people in the community to think we are clumsy or unskilled, so we instinctively try to tie beautifully and correctly.

But from the perspective of someone looking at a kinbaku photograph, images where you can clearly feel the rigger’s ego or self-consciousness are honestly tiresome. They break the illusion completely. And yet, perhaps riggers are unable to escape that trap.

Still, I am not only a rigger, but also a photographer. So I feel that I have to overcome that instinct somehow. Of course, there are moments when careful and beautiful rope is exactly what the image needs. But in other situations, I want to be able to use rougher, harsher rope that better fits the atmosphere of the scene — even if it means being seen as less skilled.

Most days are just trial and error that lead nowhere. But during yesterday’s shoot, I felt like I caught a small glimpse of something.

For the first time in a long while, I used rough straw rope instead of my usual jute rope. Straw rope is harder, thicker, and more fragile than jute, and it simply cannot be handled in the same controlled way. But precisely because of that, it felt liberating. It allowed me to step outside the usual techniques and conventions of kinbaku and tie more freely.

Wrapping the rope tightly and obsessively, driven more by desire than technique, created a kind of raw force and momentum that I think finally came through in the photographs this time.

Of course, compared to jute rope, it places a much heavier burden on the model, so it’s not something that can be done often, or with just anyone.

I will probably include some of these photographs in the next issue of ROCA, but for now I wanted to share a few of my favorites here exclusively for members. I hope you enjoy them, and as always, your comments mean a lot to me.
