This comic was a learning experience for me. I thought that they were meteorites, but Google tells me that meteoroids are objects that would become meteors if they entered the atmosphere.

You're not alone. Writing this comic took me on the same journey. I originally called them meteors, but later learned they're technically "meteoroids" and made the change to avoid scorn from the space community.
