This weekš„
Hey friends,
An overwhelming majority of you agreed to have 2 movies per week instead of the usual 1. I want to make sure you realize that, after the next TV show is done, there will be no replacement (for now). To make room for that 2nd movie spot. Anywho, I hope you're all well and enjoying the contentšš¾

Weekly Question: Whatās a meal you had that you keep thinking about??
- When Val and I were in Puerto Rico, there was this restaurant by the beach close to our Airbnb. They had this plantain and chicken wings that were to die for. Fried plantains were ripe, soft, and juicy. The chicken was well done, spicy, damnnnn. We must have gone there like four times during that trip just for that. I still think about it to this dayšš„

This is probably one of my top favorite movies, though it has definitely become much harder to watch than when I originally did. Taikaās comedy also worked really well for me (not since Love and Thunder though); despite it being hard to laugh at nowadays, knowing that this is the type of portrayal that real world nazis and white supremacists hate is a great bonus. (Similar reason why itās so hard for me to watch Inglorious Basterds nowadays, knowing how much said nazis love Hans Landa) I remember Taika also saying of the controversial choice of having him play Hitler as: ā What better way to insult Hitler than having him portrayed by a Polynesian Jew?ā Also, you sort of noticed it when at one point, but just to confirm it, Captain K (Sam Rockwell) is heavily implied to be gay and sympathetic to Rosieās underground resistance. The hints range from his closeness to Freddie, his lying to protect Elsa from the Gestapo, and his outfit at the end which is covered in pink triangles (these were used as badges to identify queer people in the holocaust)
i went to america for the first time: this paella in new york, i will never forget, and again in new york cipriani's (Wall street) i had aubergines alla parmigiana x_x still thinking about that one
If you're doing more movies I'd love to see you react to Who framed Roger rabbit and Uptown Girls two of my favorite movies
MOVIE RECS: "What's Eating Gilbert Grape" and "Fried Green Tomatoes"
I second Fried Green Tomatoes.
Okay, food memory: I'm usually not a big fan of seafood for whatever reason, even tho I'm from Spain I'd still rather not have paella on principle lmao, BUT last summer I made an effort to try new stuff with seafood in it just to test the waters (pun very much intended) and I had some of the tastiest food I've ever eaten. Wild. I think one of the things I tried was a shrimp ensaladilla rusa (which i dont know how trasnlate or why it's called that lmao) and it was delicious. Also a tuna toast with truffled mayonnaise or something like that? I dont even remember exactly what those had but I remember I was pleasantly surprised.
An awful meal memory: When I was 4 years old, my family moved to Germany from the U.S. and my dad took us out to a fancy restaurant in Wiesbaden. They asked me if I wanted fish, and I said sure, thinking it would be like the fried fish my grandpa made back home. What I got was a glistening poached fish with a face and eyeballs, which I refused to eat because I was four, and it was looking at me, but my parents insisted that I at least try one bite. I barfed right there at the table, in the lovely white-tablecloth dining room with the chandelier. Iāve never been able to look at poached fish again. Moral of story: If your four year old does not want to taste a food that looks repellent to them, donāt insist. Itās not going to turn out well. š¬ š¤¢šAlso as a result of that first dinner in Europe, I wouldnāt eat anything in a restaurant for the next 3 years except for plain pasta (no sauce).
The first time I went to New Orleans, I was only there for two days but I made eating *the priority*. Mind you this was in 2011 so a whiiiiiile ago. We ate at this restaurant in the Lower Ninth Ward that had survived Hurricane Katrina called Willie Maeās Scotch House. It was a tiny restaurant famed for its fried chicken with family style serving. You had to wait an hour outside and an hour inside before getting a table. I can STILL taste the fried chicken. Iām from the South (Tennessee), and my grandparents make soul food so well but this was next level. Unfortunately itās closed now as Willie Mae was in her 90s when I was there and sheās since passed, but I will literally never forget it. Before they closed, I very nearly planned a trip entirely around going back down there.
Food in Louisiana is good. I recommend going outside of New Orleans also... West down I-10 to Baton Rouge, Lafayette and Lake Charles.... all kinds of tiny places with some great food. It is pretty common to have king cake and boudin crawls.
When I lived in Queens, there was a taco truck around the corner from my apartment, owned and operated by a Guatemalan fam, with the most outrageously delicious birria tacos. I got them once a week, and I still can't believe my restraint.
Tacos literally give me life. Once a week? That willpower is crazy
Key West 1990 bar on the water -- conch fritters. Ate them like 3 or 4 times in a week with my mom. š„
Lived in Key West for 5 years as a child (1972 -1977) can confirm conch fritters are amazing. Spring, summer and fall were spent on the pier pretending to fish, but really I was ppl watching some of the coolest characters with their tats and hippie styles. Glad you have good memories too!
Weekly Question: Every now and then I still think about the buffet they had at a hotel where I stayed in China in ā03. I couldnāt even tell you what most of the dishes were but literally everything was so good. Spiced crispy deep-fried veggie things, garlicky noodles, rich stews, etc. It wasnāt just local food, either. Iām pretty sure there was Korean and Japanese as well. Iāve never had anything like it in the U.S. My mouth is watering just thinking about it.
DAMNNN
On a trip to New Orleans, my friend Gregg (RIP) ordered fried chicken livers at Elizabethās in the Bywater. I had spent a southern childhood avoiding chicken livers, but this Chicagoan talked me into trying one and OMG they were so good. We went back to Elizabethās the next day and I ordered the fried chicken livers with a side of cheese grits. A perfect moment.
Oh Lord. I can relate. Back in Nigeria, chicken livers and gizzards made amazing seasonings were to die for
That meal sounds so delicious I am drooling! Plantain is such an underrated delicacy. It may sound like heresy, but I prefer it to potatoes š± I do have a meal I still think about: I am lactose intolerant, but I haven't always been. I don't know why, around my late 30s, my digestive system gave up, and decided no more cheese for me. I'm still angry about it! But, before that happened, there was one day when I went to a job interview and afterwards decided to just pop into a random small restaurant right next door for lunch. I ordered a salad that had chicken and blue cheese. That salad had a mound of blue cheese in the middle, that was so blue it was pure indigo fluff with barely a few specks of white cheese holding on for dear life. It was almost sentient and could basically have walked away on its own. š¤¤š¤¤ The flavor was so intense it was almost aggressive in the tongue. And I have never tasted anything so delicious. I swear I still think about that cheese often and I still salivate about it! (I'm aware it's not everyone's cup of tea, but I just love fermented things)
I'm with you 100%. So much better than potatoes. It's so interesting because Val also developed a honey allergy when she was 24, Just out of nowhere, her body was like no more I love how detailed you described that salad and cheese lol
Weekly question: when i was 11 or 12 me and my family went in a burger restaurant during a few days vacation in Nantes (french city in the west of france). It was the first time that i eat a good burger, not in a fast food, and i kept thinking about it for years. Every time that i tried an other one, it wasnāt as good compare to this one. I think the fact that the restaurant had a really good vibe and that the rest of the day was so awsome (my parents bought us our first manga, we went on the famous carousel of Nantes...) really helped to grave the memory of this burger in my mind. Few years later, we went back to Nantes just to eat in this restaurant again (itās like 5 hours from where my parents live) and it was closed exceptionally the only day we were there...
damnnnn. That feeling of nothing else matching up to it is so real. Maybe someday you could have it again
