Game question #2

Another thing that's come up.

How important is it that the game is playable in a browser?

I've been thinking and trying out game maker, and considering using that as a games engine instead of flash (since i animate entirely in toonboom now and export out png sequences).

Its possible that since gamemaker has android and html5 support it can be exported out as well, although i'm not sure how well html5 works vs a swf.

GameMaker is almost useless in the free version and the paid versions get expensive fast because you need to pay up 200-300 dollars per platform. That's on top of paying 100-200 for the Pro version that you need to get anything meaningful done.

idk the difference between running games as flash or via gamemaker, so go try it out if it works out well in the end. :p

As long as the animation pops up on a person's screen shortly after they click the download link (so as long as people don't have to download any special software and as long as the game file is relatively small), I think it will probably be fine. I imagine the game won't have as much popularity as your other games that work in browsers because some people will have little incompatibility issues or won't be able to download the game for whatever reason (keep in mind there are a lot of less-intelligent people out there that WILL give up on your game if a little error happens or if they're slightly inconvenienced in the process of trying to start-up the game). Also it will create a little inconsistency in your website because now you'll have some links that straight away open games, and some that are more involved and require a download. I want you to do the best you can as an artist and I really think you need to believe in K.I.S.S.: Keep It Simple Stupid because the more complicated you make your art, the less popular appeal it may get. So honestly I would discourage you from making more out-of-browser games in the future. But yeah I guess give this one a shot :)

P.S. what I said doesn't really apply if you don't care at all about fan numbers, but JESUS christ look at how close you are to your next patreon money goal. The more fans you have, the more patreon money will come in. I know I'm probably overreacting about how big of a difference your game format will affect your popularity, but every little bit counts.

Personally I download flash games and run them with the standalone flash player, it usually makes them run faster. So not important at all.

As long as it has content it doesn't matter to me whether I gotta dl it or not, as long as there's no installation involved.

The game format didn't really matter to me as long as we can still play it.
