Rogue Planets with Liquid Oceans, Post JWST Telescope Size, Non-EM Space Communication | Q&A 231

How big will the successor of James Webb and Hubble be regarding Starship faring? Can we communicate using something else from radio waves? How can a rogue planet have a liquid ocean? Could aliens look similar to creatures on Earth? How can we detect plate tectonics on exoplanets? Answering all these questions and more in this week's Q&A with Fraser.

While I was listening to the question about JWST imaging earth like planets I had wondered, would it be possible to maneuver the telescope into the shadow of the earth in its final days of the mission and turn its lens homeward for one final image?

I was just listenjng to od podcast from may with Nancy Graziano and you mentioned how you like to interview the small guys and not the big and famoust. And you mentioned Musk and Neil DeGrass. That makes me wonder did you and Neil ever had a recorded conversation. Both of you are my go to science comunicators. I would love to see you talking

Cait: water, in the form of oceans, is important for Earth's plate tectonics as it lubricates the movement of plates over each other allowing ocean floors to dive under continental shelves. Without this Earth would be like Venus; a dead world. If Earth had water but no plate tectonics there would be no continents possibly just volcanic peaks above a global ocean. So bring on that megapixel image of an exoplanet, and if we see oceans and continents then very likely it has plate tectonics.
