Vera Rubin Telescope Will Revolutionize Astronomy. Here's Why
The Vera Rubin Observatory will soon come online. It will be a game-changer for Astronomy. How exactly will it happen and how it will help SETI? We're trying to find the answers with my guest, Dr James Davenport from The University of Washington.

Great interview again Fraser, Dr, Davenport is a very interesting person to listen to and the enthusiasm both of you exude is contagious. I for one can't wait for the next 2 years to roll by.
I had a thought experiment brewing! If you wanted to see what the earth might be like in 100,200 years and still be around to witness it could you launch yourself in a (hypothetical) space ship away from earth at a significant percent of the speed of light and come back in about a year to see what earth was like after it aged a significant amount. You could theoretically do this many times and get a snapshot of earths progress (or lack of…) while only aging slightly compared to the earth. Any theoretical problems preventing this?
Remind me, what was the topic of this interview? Was it aliens performing Galactic Public Service Broadcasting or the VRT?
Great interview. While I like Dr Davenport's idea, it begs the question "Why doesn't he also propose that we set up a way to broadcast our own message when the opportunity presents?" An answer to that question might be that it might be hazardous to call attention to our existence based on the, admittedly probably remote, possibility that an aggressive, advanced civilization might covet our beautiful home. That, in turn, raises the question "Why would any other civilization deliberately expose themselves to the same risk by broadcasting such a message?" Never-the-less, there is no harm in listening. I recognize that the difficulty of achieving interstellar travel mitigates the risk, but who knows what our tomorrows will bring?
