Living Underground on Other Worlds. Exploring Lava Tubes

The Moon and Mars will probably be the first places in the Solar System that humanity will try to live after leaving the safety and security of Earth. But those worlds are still incredibly harsh environments, with no protection from radiation, little to no atmosphere, and extreme temperatures.

Living on those worlds is going to be hard, it’s going to be dangerous. Fortunately, there are a few pockets on those worlds that’ll make it a tiny little bit easier to get a foothold in the Solar System: lava tubes.

Based upon what you and many others have written about the effects of different levels of gravity on the human body, wouldn't it be prudent to build some sort of space station that could emulate lunar gravity as well as Martian gravity, put people aboard for extended periods, and then see how they fared? In a similar vein, is Elon Musk's desire to put a colony on Mars perhaps a bit premature?

Definitely, we really want to know if the human body is sustainable in lunar gravity. And the only way to get a sense is to simulate it through rotation. We know zero G sucks. But does 15% G suck too?

Great effects with the photos. Not that we don't like having to look at your face for 20 minutes -lol-, but the photos and effects are wonderful.

Hah, thanks! We've been working to extend the amount of full screen graphics and videos we can find. We're pretty much maxed out at this point.

Right now, NASA is all concerned about completely sterilizing space craft before entering any place that could possibly harbor life. Now, you are saying humans plan on living in lava tubes that are more likely to harbor life. Which way is it? Keep the area sterile from Earthly contamination or live and explore there?

It's going to be both. Sterilize as much as you can and be very cautious, but still explore places. At some point, though, I suspect NASA and others are going to just give up on trying to keep it clean. We'll infect other worlds.
