[Q&A+] Did China Really Steal the Falcon 9 Design?

BONUS QUESTION STARTS AT 13:32

Watch the video here (with no ads) or on YouTube: https://youtu.be/tdTe2acoWKc

Should SpaceX be concerned about China's reusable rocket designs? Have we ever found meteorites coming from Mercury? Why is it called the speed of light, not the speed of gravity? And in Q&A+, when should we start building a Monolith?

  • 00:00 Intro

  • 00:26 [@rwarren58] What would it take to image the surface of a planet at Proxima Centauri?

  • 03:07 [@churchdiscography] Does SpaceX mind that China basically duplicated the Falcon 9 design for a reusable rocket?

  • 07:54 [@paigepotter4682] Have we ever found anything from Mercury on Earth like we have from the Moon and Mars?

  • 09:33 [@Mefodon] Why is the speed of light not called the speed of gravity?

  • 13:32 [@geohondo] What should we leave behind?

  • 17:45 Final thoughts

Regardless - each will try new things and the others will copy and improve on those that work..

This is basicly a pretty difficult thing to pin down. SpaceX has always been pretty much open in how all their stuff works, so copying would be difficult to prove. And there have been times wheretwo different countries came up with two very similar designs in aircraft, tanks, etc. But they both wound up looking disturbingly similar because the specs used to build these items were very similar to those used by another country, so, similar problems using similar solutions are liable to look pretty similar. That said, a number of companies and countries do seem to have a habit of, how shall I say it, illicit copying other company and countries designs?

Would starlink help you on your travels?

Corection: Boston Dynamics is still the pioneer, those "100 meter srpints" type of stuff is already done there in MIT.

Going to the U.K.? You could put a mic in front of Dr Becky! You could pop in to the observatory where Astronomer Paul Fellows is usually found and for the life of me I can't recall the name of it! That particular brain cell has been removed from my 68 year-old brain pan! Probably moths, or termites, maybe fairies, or perhaps a sprite or three? Have fun and be safe 'over there'!

If we could only leave one message for the future it would be "Do not mess with AI".

If gravitational waves are traveling at the speed of light does that necessarily mean that the effects of gravity are not instantaneous across space. When I throw a rock into a pond the light reaches me at the speed of light, the sound reaches me at the speed of sound and the waves on the pond reach me last. All of these things are caused by one event and yet the "speed" of the various waves reach me at different times. Perhaps there is a FTL signal for gravity that we cannot as yet detect.
