In The Expanse, Mars became independent becase a Martian discovered the ability to travel the solar system like going across the US is a train.
I think a more interesting question is what happens if an alien race claims Mars. We view Mars as a stepping stone to the solar system/galaxy/Star Wars fantasy or whatever. What happens if that is denied us?
It makes a great “mud” room. A place to de-dust before entering the main habitat.
If the Earth unfortunately becomes an irradiated wasteland, might the option of a terraformed Mars suddenly become more appealing?
It occurs to me that any nation claiming another world will face a really difficult series of problems, largest of these is the amount of land area to be controlled.
