[Q&A+] SOS from Betelgeuse, Taste in Space, Nearby Black Hole Telescope | Q&A 363
Why do astronauts taste food differently? Do we actively look for a SOS signal for Betelgeuse? Can we use a nearby black hole as a telescope? And in Q&A+, what shape will Milkdromeda be and why?

Hi Fraser, I think you missed the point regarding the Betelgeuse kill zone question. Any civilization comparable to our level of development which resides on a planet that exists within the kill zone of Betelgeuse is just as aware as we are that the demise of Betelgeuse is pending and that they are in extreme danger of an extinction level event. As such, they might decide, in desperation, to start sending out SOS messages long in advance of the anticipated cataclysmic event...likely many centuries or millennia in advance. This particular civilization would likely send out messages in a wide range of frequencies to optimize their chances of making contact. These communications would likely reach a large number of star systems, including ours...with a fair chance of catching our attention. Of course, they would have to devise a way for other civilizations, such as ours, to understand their message. However, if there is a civilization in another star system advanced enough to be able to assist, it would be reasonable to assume that they are already present and observing the planet and its predicament...which may make effective communication more viable. The impression I got from the question is that they were wondering if someone within the blast area could send out an SOS signal while they were getting blasted by the supernova.
