[Q&A+] Destination Venus, Drilling Europa's Ice, Shape of The Universe | Q&A 338

How can we realistically get under the ice of Europa? Why Venus is such an under appreciated destination for spacecraft? What is the shape of the Universe? And in Q&A+ what would happen to Jupiter if it became a rogue planet?

Please no probing Venus & Europa with plutonium, until EnVision & Davinci complete the atmosphere investigation and stronger orbital observations. Maybe being bore in 1978 makes me a weirdo but I can not help but recall Voyager season 7 episode 18 friendship :)

Hello Fraser! Could we send any chemicals to Venus' atmosphere in order to make it transparent? If yes, which ones? What about Titan?

I thought 20 sided dice were called icosahedrons. A dodecahedron is a 12 sided die.:/

Dodecahedron means 2 x 10 sided.

Chemical Rockets *can* do interstellar travel - we've already sent vehicles screaming out of the Solar System - but the travel times are LONG. Most stars require more speed to reach than we've given any of the Solar escape probes. They all move relative to the Sun and most outpace the Pioneers, Voyagers and New Horizons by a big margin. So we need escape orbits that move a bit quicker. For example, Proxima Centauri will be 3 light years away in about 27,000 years. We want a probe to leave the Sun's gravitational Sphere of Influence at about 33 km/s or so to greet it in time, before it zooms away again.

Europa, ice probe... First of all many thanks for your videos! But wouldn't the cable behind the probe freeze to the ice? The probe melts it's way down through the ice, with a cable at it's back to communicate with the surface probe and for power delivery. The water melts, the probe sinks down in that molten water, the ice behind the probe freezes - and the cable gets stuck in that newly frozen ice behind the probe... Isn't that a very likely scenario that the cable would get stuck in the freezing ice? ---- And I second the question of another person here about the impact of the radiation of the probe and possible life there... All right, there might be quite some natural radiation from any random particles there, but still...

The wire is spooled out from the probe itself, it's supposed to freeze in the hole. You can make this stuff really light, for example, drones in Ukraine can spool out 10 km of fiber optic cable, weighing about 1 kg. For the plutonium, as long as it remains inside its capsule, it's safe. You don't want it breaking up and releasing particles.

Then you go to Europa to see if there is life under the ice, with a torpedo with a plutonium head. What happens to the possible life. I mean we haven't discovered them yet, but save the whales! 🫣

100 yrs to the nearest star doesn't seem too unreasonable to me lol. Decent chance medical science can turn off aging in the next few decades so can probably just live for 100 yrs on the ship and go there. Lol. Or generation ship. Or mind uploading (actually I have low hope for mind uploading). Lol I just wanted to "oppose" Fraser's statement of "need antimatter to get to another star in any kind of reasonable amount of time". 100 yrs is reasonable 😊

Hello Fraser can you add a database (if one does not exist atm where we can see where our shout out is located? For example, if a new person joins and you shout them out in "Q&A xxxx" I'd like to be able to find this. Mostly, for myself so I can show my friends who are fans and also want to support the chan.

Mars is the worst. Except for Venus, which is worser.
