[Q&A+] SMBH Images, Primordial Gravitational Waves, Terraforming Tidally-Locked Planets | Q&A 331

Does terraforming a tidally-locked planet make any sense? Are the images we got of our galaxy's supermassive black hole fake? Can we observe gravitational waves that came before the CMB? And in Q&A+ who is currently working on space elevators? Answering all these questions and more in this Q&A show.

Space elevators are not for use on Earth.

Dear Fraser, there are many difficulties with space elevators, but a number of them you name are solved problems if you think of it not as an elevator but as a railroad. For example, you mention the need for two lifts, one in each direction. That is the highest-capacity solution, but many freight railroads are single-tracked and use sidings to separate heavy traffic moving in opposite directions. You say that a lift capsule has low capacity. True, but a 2-km long train does not. Just as in Earthside railroading, many trains can be using a track simultaneously. Signaling, solved problem. I think you would find that taking this perspective would permit seeing that this facility would have enormous transport capacity.

The RSS reader I like the best is inoreader.com. It was the most similar to google's RSS reader before they shut it down and has a fairly minimal UI.

the half jungle half dead cold planet is an awesome setting for an RPG

Regarding the SMBH-images. It depends how a person defines "fake", in my opinion. Because if a person believes it is a real photo-picture of the SMBH, then realizes it is a computer-generated image based on data, the person could label the image as "fake". This is not making the image "fake", objectively, though - it is still based on real data. The best, in my opinion, is full transparency and efforts to be clear in titles, information etc. that is it a image based on the EHT-data + clear info/description how the image was created. Because then everyone (hopefully) gets the message about how the image is created and - voila, no discussion on "fake". (I myself believed it was an direct image" of SMHB - where the radio waves from the EHT were "converted" to an image that I can see, like JWST. I got this impression from the headlines in mainly "main media". Then I read that it is, actually, a computer AI-generated image of the data that came from the EHT). Best regards and thank you for all the videos, Space bites, Q&A, interviews and all the other content!

What's your source for this "computer AI-generated" story? Sure, it is algorithmic calculated, different parameters and different algos lead to slightly different results and the published image is kind of the "average" image from different independed teams processing the data ... but there is no "AI" involved, just actual algorithms, just "math".

Those AI overviews aren't cool. Unsourced with no accountability for misinformation is a great recipe for turning everything horrible. And they don't get any revenue from showing less ads, so I don't see how it makes business sense. Just stealing the work of people and losing money.
