Science fiction writers aren't the only people who get things wrong. When a movie or TV show features an occupation, whether they are police officers, doctors, or astronauts, people engaged in those occupations invariably groan about all the things those shows and movies get wrong. Then, every once in a while, they delight when the stories get things much more correct than most. Take the medical drama The Pit as an example. While SciFi shows have FTL, legal dramas wrap up lawsuits and criminal cases in 48 minutes (or less). I started law school in August 1995, just before the legal drama Murder One premiered. That show decided to feature a single murder trial that lasted all season. I was watching that show with half a dozen fellow law students when an associate attorney handed some legal research to the head of the firm. When he asked her if she had Sheperdized those cases (Sheperdizing tells you whether a legal precedent has been overturned), we all started clapping and pointing like we were Leonardo DiCaprio in Once Upon A Time in Hollywood. It's just so awesome when they get something right that nearly everything else gets wrong, no matter what your occupation or field of study is.
I totally agree with you. I'm a history buff and a Roman history geek/nerd. There had been moments like that in the HBO series Rome or in the Netflix series barbarians (1st season only...). Oliver Stone's Alexander is very accurate too and I clapped several times (even if the film is average, not bad but...).
Great episode, just wanted to say I really enjoy the algorithm jokes too.
A sun-observing constellation is a great idea, but we can just toss them out the window as we zip around our orbit. Boom, a ring of satellites. I’ll tell NASA.
Does that mean the error bars on how we used to measure the expansion of the universe weren't big enough after all?
No Patron Q&A for may 2025???
It's coming, it's just a monster.
Completely agree with you on the sci fi question. Writers should write the stories they want to, and handwave the stuff they need to. I adore the Expanse, the hard as well as the very squishy parts. The crunchy outer layer makes that nougat center even better. Basically, as long as they don't completely ignore the fact that gravity and such exist, I'm good.
Shame. Despite everything else, I liked the Issacman nomination. Politics always makes strange bedfellows so it's never surprising they shift like a superluminous accretion disk. (BTW, Fraser: I recently pulled Creatures of Barsaive off my bookshelf and just finished rereading it. Very enjoyable, I intend to steal many ideas for future games)
Several big stories this week
Yeah this is a huge one
Great Galactic Ghoul says om nom nom nom.
23:35 "Crum up with" ...? 😉
Jared Isaacman might be breathing a secret sigh of relief.
