How Quantum Coronagraphs Will Help Us See Earth-Like Planets Around Sun-Like Stars

Our current tech doesn't allow us to block light from Sun-like stars to see Earth-like planets. The brightness difference is just too high. One of the ways we can achieve it is with quantum coronagraphs. What are they and how do they work? Finding out in this interview.

This was so interesting. I had no idea light had this third property of spatial modes. Brilliant interview.

I’ve listened three times now and I’m starting to get some concepts. This is completely fascinating and I really appreciate this interview.

I’m probably misunderstanding this, but when I think of understanding modes, I believe modes are often caused by the shape of an object. And this technique must be assuming that the shapes of stars and planets are spheres. If that is true, wouldn’t it be really easy to detect a non-spherical shape in the pattern? Let’s say a rectangular space station or some other large structure.

oh gosh that was fascinating! definitely didn't understand all of it, but it sounds so promising!

True journalism. You often seem so prepared that you seem to be on the same level of understanding as the person you interview. Really kntwresting questions and discussions. I never thought so much different information could be found from light. Is there any other type of information we could get from light if we manage to develop the technology for it in the future?

I did enjoy the interview, it's good to listen to a student with such enthusiasm for his research, maybe there is hope for the future. When you started to joke about the abuse of the "Quantum" word I started to think about other examples. The obvious one is quantum computing which had great promise but hasn't quite delivered. Let's hope the quantum filter fares better.

Amazing concept! Thank you so much for bringing us such thought provoking conversations! And that is what differentiates what you do compared to others. You do report. You do interview. But more importantly, you create a conversation with your guests which has them open up and share their deepest insights and enthusiasm. Thanx again!
