[Space Bites+] Nearby Supernova is Coming // Stripping Stars // Limits for Titan Life

We finally know exactly how long it takes Uranus to turn once; there’s a Type 1a supernova in the making, and it’s really close; how much total life could be on Titan? and a new comet could brighten in the coming weeks. And in our Space Bites+ on Patreon, how our understanding of the physical properties of galaxies could be wrong.

At 13:38, what's a cubic litre? (0.001 m³)³ = 1e-9 m⁹? :-) It sounds like there's some interesting geometry happening on/in Titan besides the potential life... Based on the article on Universe Today, I presume you just meant to say 1 cell per litre. Anyway, thanks for the update.

Obviously, a cubic liter is a a liter of volume specifically in the shape of a cube :) :) :)

Why were you hating on the last comet? i posted photos in your discord it was the best comet in like 20 years. incredible images.

Yay on hitting the milestone!

Thank you for mentioning all three currently active Gravitational Wave observatories: LIGO, VIRGO, and KAGRA. Too often, LIGO is mentioned and no others. Looking forward to others coming online to add to this fascinating science.

i Love the change in format where you credit the person who wrote the article related to the story you are telling in Space bites int the past few episodes. Its already starting to influence me to read more from the site written by authors you showcase. Thanks for this addition.

Question: if the helium core of a star was exposed, and due to the extremely reduced mass that was compressing it down, wouldn’t it expand out to a vaporous round ball, which would then be consumed by the black hole?

ah what a tease... 23 Billion years?! Back to rooting for Betelgeuse to flip its lid...

How do we know that all type 1a supernovae have the same energy?

Sorry if you know this and are asking a different question than I am understanding. You want to look up the Chandrasekhar limit. It’s math that shows a tipping point which, in any system where mass is slowly increasing on a white dwarf, it can’t avoid “detonating” at a very specific value and hence energy level. That’s why a Type 1A only comes from configurations where mass is slowly accreted.
