How Simulated Observations Help Future Telescopes
Future telescopes like Vera Rubin and Nancy Grace Roman will generate a lot of data. This will be a big challenge. To get ready for it astronomers use simulated observation data. Why is it important and how is it done? Finding out in this interview.

Hmm... Penta bytes of data over the internet is more than a bit worrying. My new superfast broadband supposedly supports 150Mbits/second but even if the download maintained 100% rate (very unlikely) it would still take ~2 years for one penta byte! Not to mention storage and processing. It calls for some serious pre-processing and compression at the telescope site(s) before release, what work has be done on that?
Fascinating. Been watching for a long while so happy to support. But I do have a question ….. JWT has a sunshield … but how is it pointed on target? It’s at a L point but that still orbits the sun? I’m struggling to visualise what its field of view could be.
Fascinating stuff. Great interview.. thanks!
