Exploring new territories

Hello everyone.

Just a heads-up, this very long post is just my thoughts on the game and not some sort of announcement. This is just me rambling and accompanying it with a render. Feel free to skip the long read 😂

One of the main concerns I have with CoMS is time. It has been more than 5 years since I started learning and working on the game. So many things have changed.

If we observe the release cadence of updates over the years and should the end of Chapter 4 be the middle of the story, we're looking at a decade-long journey to completion, if we're generous.

I can understand there are those who have come and gone. Those that have played the game back in 2021 that never could have imagined after 5 years we are only just about to reach halfway and recognizing that likely have turn them away. It is hard to imagine following something for 10 years, knowing it very well could take that long and still be interested.

As for me, while I wish I could be faster, there is something that is a bigger concern to me than speed. I completely understand those that have lost interest due to how long the story have taken to develop and how much longer it could take, I think it is a completely valid reason, quality simply matters more.

One of the challenges of continue development on a project that is ongoing and regularly updated is keeping up with time. Every month there are new games released with better and better technology, ideas and talent behind them. They have fresh new assets, new animations, new UI, new mechanics. And every year goes by the old games get more and more dated, especially in the visual department.

I remember games from 2018, games that inspired me to go on this journey. I remember how old they look by the time 2021 came by. This is not an insult or critique to old games, just stating the fact that newer assets are of higher quality, they are more detailed. Lighting techniques that used to be relatively unknown and limited to very few developers are now almost standard knowledge. The floor have never been higher.

This puts me and CoMS in an interesting position. Full disclosure, I personally believe my game looked great for 2021, dare I say one of the best visually. And every update since I've tried to keep up with time. I want to keep up with the latest and greatest if not staying ahead of the curve. This mean continue development of my own knowledge and skills. I'm very proud to say every year I've found new things that I could learn and implement into the game, visually-speaking. I think this is what helps CoMS looking as good as it is despite its age.

But there is a limit to how far you can take something. There are things just simply out of your control. One of the biggest reasons older games can't escape looking dated after a few years is just because you can't keep remaking character assets over and over again. The characters look a certain way that people are familiar and even attached to. Not to mention the time it takes to remake anything. If you were to ask players what they would prefer the developer spend time on, remaking or new content, I firmly believe new content wins out every time. It is very hard to justify constantly upgrading the characters with new tech.

In the case of CoMS, I do very gradual updates to my characters, many times they are not even noticed by players. I use every new update as an opportunity to reevaluate the current status of my characters. Not every character receive updates every year, but they do receive small tweaks and fixes at some point in the past 5 years. Lana, for example, received the most updates, she gets changes almost every update. This isn't because of some bias, but just because she is the most customized of my characters but also my first. She had a lot of foundational technical issues because I didn't know what I was doing. And instead of completely remaking her from scratch, I've just been updating her once or twice a year.

What does this have to do with the render you might be wondering? Well, to quickly explain some concepts for those who might not be aware, vast majority of AVN devs use DAZ Studio to make our renders. The reason we use DAZ is because it is the most accessible 3D software at rendering characters you can customize. You can dress them up, tweak their looks, hit render and you got a render. It is very easy to get into and do all of that, relatively speaking.

One of the things DAZ do is generations, their character models are separated by generations they called Genesis. Currently, the latest is Genesis 9 or G9. CoMS was developed when G8.1 just came out. For that reason, only Lana, Mireille, Blanche and Safiya were G8.1. The others were G8. I eventually updated all of them to G8.1 two years ago.

G8.1 was not a full generational upgrade, but it did made a huge leap from G8 in terms of fidelity and control over facial movements. For those who have been following AVN since before 2021, most games were made with G8, sometimes even older models if you got further back than even 2018.

One of the problems with a new generation is that assets are typically not compatible between generations. Stuff like clothing, plugins, animations, hair, etc. For that reason, it is often not practical to just upgrade characters to the next generation, not to mention the potential visual discrepancy the upgrade progress could bring.

And so I have no intentions of upgrading to G9. Not even new characters will be G9 in order to keep everything looking like they belong together. However, and some time I should at least try it and educate myself, update my knowledge and skills. So, this render is my first attempt at creating a character using G9.

But that's not all. Because while upgrading to G9 is impractical, something else isn't that I haven't talked about yet, is Blender. Blender is a very powerful 3D software that offers loads of features DAZ do not have. Blender is a far more reliable software as it is widely used outside of AVN industry. It has more support, more updates. If I want to consider the future of a 10-years game, I have to consider tools that have a more certain future.

And so, this is not only my first G9 character, it is also my first character that I did the sculpting in Blender.

The character was still based on a G9 asset, I did not sculpt this from scratch, I merely tweaked it, using it as a base to create a character I have in mind. But this opens up a lot of potential uses, some I have already implemented into the game in the last update. The most common usage is fixing clothing.

In this case, the collar of the jacket would have been upright like it is on the left collar and clipping into her long hair. I could try and fix it in DAZ, but with all due respect to the creator of the plugin that enables said feature in DAZ, doing this in Blender is much easier. Barely took a minute to fix this in Blender. I also did a lot of other fixes but I won't get into every little bit of it.

What this mean is that going forward, I am very excited by the potential of Blender. I could do my usual upgrades and tweaks there instead of DAZ, it's just a new avenue where new things can be incorporated.

There is also a potential future where i just move platform and render in Blender as well. Doing this will be a huge undertaking and not likely to happen. Despite everything, DAZ still offers a lot of convenience that Blender do not. If there is a window of opportunity do it, it would be after the next update. Staring down another 5 years of development, I have to think about the future, and I don't know what the future of DAZ will hold, but Blender is likely the more stable and reliable platform.

I'm going to cut it "short" here. This is a way longer post than I intended and I could go on and on and on and on...

Thank you for reading, if you've gotten this far. Have a good day!

Good post. I like to see the dev's progression throughout. Although, imo, CoMS is beautiful from the first click and remains that way till the end of the latest update. 😁

Thanks El Jefe! I wish I could see my old 2021 renders that way XD It is hard for me to look at them without cringing.

I really love this render. Will this be a new character for CoMS or is it a character idea for a future game

No, this was just a tech demo. I just like goth/punk/rock aesthetics in general.

Hey there, sexy lady 🥰💕! Hit me, GT 😋! A decade-long journey is nothing. In fact... I want it to be longer 😅. I have been playing AVN for more than a decade (13 years), and my Devs that started that love are still active and going strong (Tlaero & Mortze of Tora Productions; amazing devs and people). Players come and go... but not me... I WILL STILL BE HERE SUPPORTING 😛! And I'm an anime fan, so I'm used to long series spanning years 🤣. You are right on that. New techniques/devices/hardware are changing the games. New games have looked visually more fantastic than ever. But that's just how times go 😅. I have always considered COMS to be UP THERE with the greats! The visuals and lewd content can be great, but stories and our character relationships will always be the priorities/selling points 😅. And COMS continue to intrigue us 😋. True on that again. I do wish Devs would work on newer content than remaking earlier work. I say it lots of times, but I LOVE it when the earlier work remains in the game. It's nostalgic and a reminder/time capsule. Seeing our Devs improve over the years is validating and is so rewarding as a supporter 😋. Yeah... I know all about DAZ and the Genesis 😅. I like the character, GT. Keep on improving your technique and skills. I mean, every Dev dabbles in both DAZ and Blender eventually 😅. Glad to see you're excited, GT 😁👍🏻! Can't wait to see what the future holds for all of us and COMS 🤗. Nah, man... don't cut it short! Keep going 😂. Awwwww 😖. Happy 4th of July to anyone who celebrates 🥳🎇🎆! Hope you all have a great week. Don't forget we all love you ❤️🫶🏻! And you're never alone; our devs'/their games connect us all 🤗.

I might say something unexpected, but render quality, while appreciated, is a bit overrated. I only found the game like a week ago. The biggest reason for me to play and support developers are interesting stories. To the point that sometimes new VNs have the best renders, but the story and system of choices make it unpleasant/uninteresting to read. While the old ones with excellent stories built with old HS1 still captivate despite very basic visuals by today's standards. What I'm hinting at is that it is fine, IMO, to simply maintain the current visual quality and ensuring the story that they accompany is worth reading. You shouldn't feel like there is a moving target to chase in this department. On a similar note, animations are even more overrated, but you get that already.

Thank you for your support. The thing about visual is more of a developer concern. At the end of the day, visuals from an end-user perspective is subject to personal taste. However, from the developer perspective, we have to make conscious decisions to shape it. In other words, I appreciate visuals might not be a priority to you, but we developers don't get to ignore that aspect, we have to decide how important it is for our project. Some devs do not care, others do. At the end of the day, these games are our creative vision manifested. So to me, it is a major pillar of CoMS along with storytelling.

Listen, All I will say is this... I enjoy your game and I like the renders you have done. I personally don't give a shit about those that complain and want things their way. It's your story and I happen to enjoy it. That is all I can say, you are staying true to yourself and the origins of the story when you started it. I of course want to see it finished because I really like it and how you choose to do that is and should be entirely up to you but I think you have done really good work so keep doing you, bud.

Thank you, Echo. I think everyone can have their opinions and this post wasn't about negative feedback or people that lost interest in the game. This was more about just what I do to deal with the reality of time, keeping up with the latest tech and standards. As I said in the post, I think people leaving over time is perfectly reasonable and expected, it doesn't have much of an impact on me.

Hey Gallant, I’m a fairly new member here and I’ll give ya my lowly opinion, as soon as I found this game and played it I was hooked, you mentioned in part of your post that back in 2021 you thought your game was a top tier game for the year, let me tell you something, you might think your game has aged or is not up to date but you are sooooo very wrong, your women in the game are extremely beautiful, your animations are still some of the best that I have seen and I play an enormous amount of games ( I’m 62 and retired) the story is phenomenal, the MC is handsome and very well built which leaves the impression why all the women are infatuated with him ( many games have MC’s that are stone cold ugly and you say to yourself, why the hell are all these women attracted to him) in your game this is not the case, usually when there is a harem as large as this one not all of the women are attractive but damn my brother not one of the women in this game is unattractive, they are all simply gorgeous, and I wouldn’t worry about how fast you get your updates out, I think most people here would rather have a quality update instead of something rushed, you said that you’re incorporating blender in your development, that might be a good decision because believe me when I tell you that I know nothing about developing a VN game but many of my other devs complain all the time about Daz, one even said the the newest update sucked, you think that software like this that’s been out since 2004 would be high quality by now but it seems like it unfortunately isn’t which in my opinion is crazy, anyway just keep what you’re doing because sometimes if it’s not broken don’t fix it, the game is phenomenal, you also mentioned about people leaving because it takes so long to release updates, the way I look at it if I have to wait there’s a hundred other games that I can play while I’m waiting for your amazing game to be developed, I’ll definitely be with you until the end, thank you for all your hard work and dedication to this amazing game ❤️💪😎

Thank you Balboa. I actually think my game holds up well, but that's because I keep updating. This is probably one of the things I'm most proud of. I know there are still things I did back in 2021 people are still not doing today. So in some ways, I am still ahead of the curve. With that said, I also am aware of areas I've fallen behind on. Some are animations related which I do not do. Back in 2021, lack of animations isn't that big of a deal, but nowadays, every game has them.

Hey man, I understand, and you're not alone. Throughout the years of following and playing AVNs, each developer had the same mindset as you. They look to the future with blender despite being comfortable at DAZ, they wonder if they can even finish their stories. Some such as "CarbonBlue" realize they took time for granted after receiving a terminal diagnosis. What we are experiencing is life and the choices we make that shape the future and ourselves. What you are worrying about is completely valid. Some come and go, but you can bet your ass that other, like me, will stay with you till the end of your story. Keep your chin up, you have a passion. Just don't burnt yourself out over this, you still have supporters.

G
Gallant Trombe · July 4, 2026

Thank you for the encouragement, but actually I'm not too concerned about people leaving over how long the game will take. Obviously I would love to keep everyone around, but that's unrealistic. The point of the post is actually what concerns me more, which is to keep CoMS as visually awesome as it could be despite how old it is. This doesn't mean going back to old updates and remaking them, just mean every new update I try to advance my own skills and knowledge and update my tools to avoid stagnation.

hey don't bash yourself too much this is one of my favorite games and your doing better than those developing Being a DiK ......its been even longer there.....but i like both games :)

Thank you Michael. I guess this post might have came across that way, but I'm not bashing myself here. So, no worries!
