October Newsletter: Happy Halloween

Howdy Ho! Here is a newsletter update about what’s going on in my life!

I’m teaching Comics class and Character design class this semester. In Comic class we are currently learning how to make a webtoon. My poor students…..they overscopped their Episode and now they are taking on a full length chapter for their first project. They are learning first hand just how challenging making a Webtoon is. They are all very capable and I’m very proud of them for what they are accomplishing. I’m also spending the majority of my time creating lesson plans and giving them all feedback. I was curious if anyone is interested in having access to my lesson plans here? I can save my PowerPoints off as PDFs and you guys can check it out. If you want it, I’ll put it on the $3 tier. I was thinking of maybe starting online tutorials this summer on Tiktok too. There’s not many resources out there for comics and maybe I can help with that? Let me know your thoughts!

But yeah, being a college professor surprisingly a ton of work. I love being a professor and teaching, but I’m struggling with this generation of students. I can say that my students are divided into 2 camps. Students that are adults and take accountability, want to learn, and are applying themselves….and students who still think they are in high school, do not come to class, don’t know how to read instructions, do not turn in work, and do not care (despite getting into 100k debt at this school. (My class costs 5k)) Due to this, half my students are failing. I’m spending a lot of time really trying to save students who don’t seem to understand I’m trying to save them.

I used to be a high school teacher so I know first hand what it’s like to teach kiddos. My students are all sophomore to seniors, so I’m thinking this might be the covid generation students and they are a bit behind due to that. This past month with midterms were hard especially. I had to have a lot of difficult conversations with students about failing my class, expectations, and professionalism. It’s very sad to me because I try to make my class fun for everyone. Maybe it’s a part of learning a new job. I just found that this ate into my art time so much that I didn’t draw anything (which I hate). I’m hoping November will be a nice change since I already had these hard talks and maybe some students will see the light?

ALSO! I had a modern day tragedy. My instagram was destroyed, disabled, and blocked. I lost 10 years of memories, all my posts, photos, mutuals, and friends. I had 65k followers and now I’m forced to start over. What happened is that my facebook was hacked, taken down, and then my instagram was also shut down because they were tied. I made a new account and got meta verified to talk to a customer service rep. That rep told me nothing could be done, it was lost forever, and there was no reason why it was lost. I think the AI flagged it and they just let it die. It was a huge loss for me and it really hurt me. I had a full crash out from it. There is a ton of art that was lost pre 2019 that I did not have backed up because the computer with the files died. They also banned me from using any variation of my username (hannahalexandra_art) I also fear that it could have been the NSFW teasers (which were SO TAME). So, I’m going to keep my new instagram (Host_Webtoon) clean and make an alt for the teasers

I’m taking this as a challenge to grow again and I believe if I really hustle reels and fanart I can make a comeback. It is a huge undertaking and project to rebuild/repost all my old art though. I’ve been currently going through Forever After and DAMN! I grew so much! I’m very proud of my old work, because I did the best I could in the crunch. But it’s so refreshing to do work that I have fun with and actually like. Drawing my own characters is far superior than drawing characters made by someone else.

!!!! ALSO!!!! I was thinking of maybe taking polls for the next animatic here. I used to do it on my instagram, but it makes more sense to have them here. Let me know if you all would like that!

I will be posting a couple times in the $3 tier in November to make up for what was missed in October on the $3. That tier is the Webtoon sneak peaks chapter tier. Sadly, I haven’t had the time to push forward to far on those projects. I will share what I have, but they are rough storyboards without text/lines/and polish! I personally dislike posting my boards without word bubbles because people will not be able to figure out what’s going on. Maybe you can make it a fun little game and guess what’s happening?
