Act 6-58: An Unexpected Selection
TL : Cnine
ED/PF :
Part 1
On the weekend, the names of the participants of the special class in Babel were publicly posted on the bulletin board in front of the entrance of Ōuboro Academy. The students of Ōuboro Academy, who usually adhere obediently to the school's policies, were unusually furious about the announcement.
There were three listed participants of the special class: Rosemary Loto Amelia, Muto Kaien, and Lumine Hellner. Naturally, the students’ dissatisfaction didn't stem from the selection of these three individuals.
Rose and Muto were originally transfer students from the prestigious Saint Clan Academy. From their perspective, these students were already in a different league.
Researchers from Babel Headquarters visited the schoolyard daily to study Lumine’s natural affinity for spirits and phantom beasts. However, from an outsider’s perspective, the so-called research seemed to be nothing more than Lumine excitedly hugging summoned animals like rabbits, cats, and weasels while letting out delighted squeals. Even so, it was a rare occurrence for researchers from Babel to visit Ōuboro Academy. Because of this, the students likely assumed that Lumine's presence at the academy was due to some special reason.
The students of Ōuboro Academy were dissatisfied for the exact same reason as I was. That’s right. Listed under the Special Class (S-Class) was Kai Heineman—mine.
The name Special Class (S-Class) alone implied that it was an elite selection of the most outstanding students, there was little doubt about that. Yet, I had scored the worst in both the aptitude test and the practical exam. It was nothing short of a miracle that I had even been admitted to Ōuboro Academy in the first place. Most likely, my admission to this academy was the result of political maneuvering by the upper echelons of the Amelia Kingdom. They had likely pressured Babel into accepting me in order to uphold the outdated tradition that required Royal Guards to attend the same academy as the heirs to the throne.
I, too, had forced Babel to take rather aggressive measures regarding the matter with Ariel and Shikye. Because of that, it was difficult for me to strongly criticize their decision this time.
At any rate, it was undeniably strange for someone like me, utterly incompetent and incapable of using magic, to be selected to attend S-Class. I could fully understand why the other students would find it frustrating and unacceptable. Even if they were considered underachievers within Babel, the fact remained that gaining admission to Babel itself was an incredibly difficult feat. In the grand scheme of this world, they were still excellent students. That was precisely why they couldn't stand the thought of losing to someone like me, one of the biggest failures in this world. That was likely the root of their frustration.
Even so, it seemed that my rampage in front of Babel had been largely ignored. There weren’t even any rumors about it, so perhaps a strict gag order had been enforced. Well, that elf boy named Torula was apparently the son of Lorelei’s chancellor. If word got out that he had not only caused a scene but was also utterly beaten in public by someone as incompetent as me, it would be a disgrace to his nation. I could certainly understand why they’d want to keep it under wraps.
「Why someone like you are chosen!」
The male senior with buckteeth, who had been among Muto’s entourage the other day, shouted at me while glaring as if I was his mortal enemy.
「Who knows, you can try to ask Babel's side. They're the ones who made the decision.」
I raised my hands, shrugged my shoulders, and told him my honest opinion on the matter.
「Just you wait. I'll twist that smug face of yours into one of fear and regret!」
He left after spitting out such a parting remark, taking his companions with him.
Hmm… Even so, what on earth could Chloe and the others be thinking?
Babel was a magic-focused academy. There was no point in someone like me—a swordsman who couldn't use magic—joining the elites of Babel.
「Kai, there may be a strong request from Vice Principal Rasputin regarding this matter, but...」
Seeing Rose hesitate and cut off her words awkwardly, I...
「I understand. I don't intend to cause unnecessary trouble... As long as they're not going too far too.」
I responded firmly, dispelling any of her concerns.
「I'm not trying to say that...」
Rose was speaking unusually hesitantly today. In any case, now that it had been publicly announced on such a large scale, there was no turning back. Besides, I had no intention of overturning Babel's decision by force. Sometimes, going with the flow could be interesting as well.
「Anyhow, now that you're being chosen, you ought to do your best.」
I began to walk as I muttered those words.
