Episode 28: 9/11 Comes Earlier Every Year [with Guest Rob Zacny]
Hello! This week the girls are joined by Rob Zacny, cofounder of Remap Radio, host of Star Wars podcast A More Civilized Age, and panelist on F1 podcast Shift+F1! The girls had a bunch of notes written out but immediately got distracted for almost three hours. Sorry about that.
We discuss Mazda, the catfish Chevrolet Camaro, living at a race track, generational trauma of The Sports Car You Missed Out On, revving for 9/11, the narrative complexity of Codemasters' F1 series, getting your wife to sim-race, Dire Straits,
Our opening theme as always is off the album Horse Tranquilizer Simulator by Stella Spazzatura and thank you as always to our wonderful editor Alex (@nohopeoverkill.com on Bsky)!

The girls actually didn't really have any sources for this episode because it's like three hours of riffs.

Anyone else just have a deep personal connection with kind of a meh truck/car? My father drove a early to mid 90s Ford F-150 with 4 wheel drives where you had to get out and lock the hubs on the front wheels. Work as a Forester in northern maine, he put that thing through hell and it can out on top. Had a double gas tank you could switch modes in. I just love that kind of high pitched whine the transmission made. That said, my father also died in that same F-150 in an explained crash.
Fun fact: Max Verstappen is a big iRacing sicko and uses his dad's name for his alt account
When I was shopping for a used Camaro in 2002, my first car, it was like Search matches: 26 (filter out knife-slashed interiors) Search matches: 9
Man you ain't lyin about old non-American cars. I have a 30 year old Integra, which is a variant of one of the most popular cars of the last 50 years and goood luck finding a lot of parts. Especially if they're plastic.
Might not have any connection to all these racing games besides GT4, but very happy to hear about Victoria's nascent love for Dire Straits, also Rob testing out a fancy vinyl player with Telegraph Road. Hell yeah
Woah woah woah Rob Zacny?! Crossover I never ever expected I listen to a lot of podcasts in the "Betheaverse", and BtB even has some crossover with Dropout comedians, but AMCA has always been a little bit siloed off on its own
honestly these days it reads to me more as the November Kelly Extended Podcast Universe
relating completely to victoria and rob in this one because my go-to solution for racing games for [checks watch] 17 years or so has been to get a camaro tuned for excessive straight-line speed and a, shall we say, tenuous relationship with traction. then just going sideways for half the track. shoutouts the forza 3 camaro which basically uncoupled all four tires the second you touched the stick but also, when it had an inch of straight track, took off like an S-75 that saw gary powers and as i approach my forties, the "well, that wouldn't be so bad to have as a car, dude..." voice grows ever louder
third host third host third host cmon bring him in full-time this was so great
If you think he's great, listen to A More Civilized Age, top tier podcast
If I make a donation to Traction should I mention the podcast or no? I don't know if it will help raise awareness or just make it?
Please do, I don’t mind at all if you mention it, but no matter what I deeply appreciate it!!
Long episode! No worries about the Eclipse trashing. 😅
Oof, 8 bus mentioned. I usually just walk it up Denny rather than wait.
Not sure if it is just me but the pods seem to have audio drift that gets worse with longer runtime. Maybe a tail sync could help to correct alignment?
NFS most wanted was my favorite growing up I loved taking that Chevy cobalt ss and making it the fastest car in the game
Gran Turismo 4 and Most Wanted both on PS2 got me into cars in my teens. Beating Razor in the Evo was sooo good.
Incredible storyteller!
As bad as Microsoft is, Horizon 6 did fix a lot of the generic feeling. Japan does feel more unique than the past three games. Plus you can also just fast travel everywhere you've driven from the start for free. It's no longer gated behind credits of bonus boards. That being said, even with Horizon 6 being the best Horizon game in a long time it is still quite sauceless. As far as unique racers go, Screamer came out, was very different, and therefore alienated a lot of people. But the people who love it absolutely love it.
Copart mention! You should look into some of the like new cars you can get for cheap under the "biohazard" tag that just have a bunch of blood in them
A 2010(?) Mazda 3 hatchback on a manual gearbox was the most fun I've ever had with a daily driver. Loved that zoomie gal. It was even that plum/purple color they had for a while, suitably queer and not at all a prognostication for my future.
While prior to her buying an Ioniq 5, I did get an ev6 based in part on the opinions of Tran Girlismo. So I would chalk that is a W for Jordan.
Wait. A 50 character limit!? Web devs keep using dumb fucking numbers; 63 characters is the obvious number to use.
"obviously, it's my job to manage my parents' emotions." too relatable fuck
The joy that came over me when I saw its damn near 3 hours...
Oh heck yeah Jordan knows what SIGNALIS is!!
i have a masters in materials science and have yearned for the lab ever since graduating. the spectrometer fills me with fiery jealousy and i would do anything to have it.
Need for speed was my racing game series of choice as a kid. Underground 2 and Most Wanted are easily my favorites. I still have a pc copy of Most Wanted on my pc Also, I also had a special childhood relationship with Cameros. My step dad had a 1989 Camero as a project car.
I’ve never made such a sickos face as I did when Rob mentioned the spectrometer
I'd love to keep doing my shtick...but I've been hit by the 50 character limit.
Wonderful episode, looooooong. Rob was a great guest! Shoutout other MA peeps.
Jordan was at turbodork? We need a model cars episode!
Love to see the direct effect of Rob "five star run time" Zachny
I love some kayfabe car music--I insisted on era-appropriate music at all times in my Fiero: Prince's Greatest Hits, the Top Gun soundtrack and the local yacht-rock station were in constant rotation (along with the attitude-correct interloper Daft Punk Alive 2007)
Okay but that Silverado with the 2 inches of water probably still started up and drove great
You know as far as any truck drives great
yaaaay trangirlismo 28 is out, and 2 years early!
Oh god the "mom who views everything through a phantasm that makes her the victim" fuckin sniped me :c
