Learn!

I've been seeing so many people (especially young people) talking themselves out of learning something new just because we have AI built into so much of our lives. And I'm here to tell you, it's worth the effort to learn how to create! Making art completely changed my life and opened me up to a whole new world, it gave me a voice and a platform and a chance to actually make a difference.

But it doesn't even have to be that big. Just letting yourself communicate through art, even a tiny amount, is like leaving your fingerprint on the world and letting others know you were here. Because at the end of the day, we're all trying to connect with others, wouldn't it be more meaningful if we did that with our own brains instead of letting a machine do it for us?

I am currently writing two novels for fun. I already have one under my belt - 116,000 words

I wanted to thank you for your encouragement in drawing (even though I am not a young person anymore :D). I have almost no ability to draw but you inspired me to try. I created a neopages and had my friends look and they were complimentary (knowing my friends I figured they would roast me :D) .

The last panel is a stone's throw away from xkcd, only not quite simple enough. Anyway, I love the different styles that you drew in in this comic.

Lean how to do things for your own enjoyment. Learn how to cook because you want to, learn how to knit because you want to, learn a language, learn anything because you want to do so.

While I don’t make art myself, I express myself with my tattoos, and when I get art of my characters I always work with human artists 💙

I drew really terrible comics from 1999 until 2016. My ability to draw never got past a kindergarten level despite doing it regularly for many years. I didn't stop because I lost interest, I just got a bad case of creative block and fell out of the habit. I can't believe it's been 10 years (this must be how George R.R. Martin feels...) I'd like to start making art again, if only to contribute some human made slop to counterbalance all the algorithm* generated slop. *I cannot bring myself to contribute to the misuse of the term AI to describe the current craze of LLM algorithms that aren't intelligent in the slightest. They don't "think", they're just a really advanced form of procedural generation based on whatever data is input into them (which is almost entirely copyrighted works that none of the companies making these environmentally destructive delusion engines asked permission to use...)

Great message and icon shifting! The biggest disappointment of AI is rather than fostering creativity, it all looks generic. Few are truly unique. You, on the other hand, can draw many styles beautifully even though you may have favored one.

Best comic ever!

I was told constantly, as I was growing up, that I couldn’t draw, so don’t bother. When I was fifty, I decided that they were right, but I could make lines on a computer, so I learned enough GIMP to make stick figure comics. They aren’t Prince Valiant, or Peanuts, or Pizza Cake, but they make people laugh, and they aren’t AI, so I’m happy with that.

Yeah, after 25 years of not drawing because I wasn't instantly good at it, I've finally started to draw, and I'm dogshit, but I'm less dogshit that an AI bro

This will sound weird, but for me, it's the *friction*. Back when I drew regularly (early to mid 2010s), I don't think I ever had a drawing I really liked. Even when I finally decided something was "finished", it was usually that I couldn't edit it any further. Then, after posting it, I would see more things that need to be fixed. I could follow all the references, guides, etc, and it's still not looking how I intend. In short, I was never happy, and I finally stopped entirely in 2019. I've been told that's an ordinary thing with artists and maybe they just adapt to it, but for me, feeling unhappy with everything that came from my hands / pencil / digital paint set off a (very long) depressive period. To be clear, no, I don't use "AI art", and I don't consider AI image generation to be art. But when I tried gen AI (when it was much newer), I was a lot less bothered by the outcome not being what I intended because I wasn't invested in the first place.

I love this message. It's like how I like to make baskets, not because I can't just go buy a plastic tote from Walmart, but because I enjoy the journey of gathering what's needed from the woods, the tools, the practice and inventing the designs. I want something special for the sake of it being special. AI art is just more factory-made stuff.
