Open Post - March Release - Kobolds & Cowboys
Tier Release Links
_______
Hey Critical Crew!
This month’s release throws your table into the thick of a heist of most epic proportions. Kobolds and Cowboys is a high-velocity train heist set in the blazing badlands of Nowhere, where steam-powered constructs connect inhabitants of the desolate region with iron tracks and outlaw posses are an every day occurrence.
The locomotive races towards the horizon and the only way forward is from one train car to the next, fighting across roofs, through cargo holds, dining cars, prison wagons, and armored vaults while the desert tears past around you.
At its heart, this release is built for grindhouse-style play. Your table takes on the role of a reckless kobold posse attempting to hijack a coal-powered locomotive golem, fighting forward until they are thrown from the train, blown apart, or crushed beneath iron wheels. Death is not a setback - it's expected and happens frequently. When one kobold falls, another rides in from the dunes atop a naked mole rat and joins the fray. The result is chaotic, fast, and hilariously lethal - a moving dungeon where survival is earned car by car, and the train itself is the final obstacle.
Because of the nature of this release and because we are turning it into a physical book, the layout is a bit different, and you will find even more content than usual coming to you this month!

Train Encounters
This release has 20 train car encounters, each designed to function as its own contained challenge while contributing to the larger heist. From passenger cars filled with armed civilians to trapped cars, prison transports, and volatile cargo holds, every car presents a distinct challenge with multiple ways to approach it. Some reward clever planning while others punish hesitation. All of the encounters are modular, and built to keep the train (and the chaos) moving forward!
Stat Blocks
This release includes 8 brand new statblocks, as well as 14 previously released Critical Crafting creatures for use with the train encounters!
Throw your players right into the fray as members of the kobold posse, with each kobold filling a distinct and dangerous role in the heist.
Play as the volatile Boom Boom blowing yourself up for the posse, the recoil-launching Shotgunner, sharp-shooting Law-Bringer, loot-finding Prospector, and mechanically augmented Tinkerer with their Clockwork Rats in tow, plus the Nowhere naked mole rats! Together, these statblocks form a modular outlaw crew designed to overwhelm, adapt, and, when necessary, go out in a blaze of glory.
And with the return of some of the previous Nowhere fan-favorites like the Cactus Dragon, the Outlaw, and the Gravewalker; and other desert creatures like the Sandformed Scorpion and the Werecrocodile, your players are in for a good time!

As always, we have to share some love with the folks in the Hivemind community for helping us brainstorm and fine tune the content in this release! If you have yet to join the Critical Crafting discord community and get involved, you're missing out!
This release is a special one for us, as it was born from an idea amongst friends that slowly took shape and form at our own home D&D group before finally seeing the light of day at our first-ever Paint 'n Take event here in our home town of Fort Wayne. It has since been played at our city's inaugural MadCon gaming convention, and was so well-received that we knew we had to turn it into a release so that you all could bring it to your own tables!
Another fun fact - for those of you who plan on attending Origins Game Fair 2026 in Columbus, OH - we will be running this at our booth all weekend long so be sure to stop by and see how long you can survive!! AND selling this release as a physical book at the con!
Lastly, stay tuned for next month, as you all are formally invited to The Faceless Court. Attend the grand ball of The Hollow Crown, an enigmatic entity that does not demand coin, loyalty, or blood for entry - only your name. In His court, identity is currency, faces are optional, and those who forget who they are rarely leave. It's best to decide in advance what you are willing to surrender at the door....
