okay so as a Swede, here's how to properly eat Surströmming; Open the can UNDER WATER so that the smell doesnt get out and so that the spraying doesnt happen and also make sure you're very drunk when doing this, cut the fish into smaller bites (also i dont think the skin is supposed to be on while eating) and enjoy!

I won't be the first to say it, and I won't be the last. This is also only to the best of my knowledge. Surstömming is meant to be used in extremely small amounts as an addition to a dish, for a hint of flavor, not eaten out the can like peaches. But then you wouldn't get the views...

Surströmming really is HORRIFIC! I'm Swedish and let me tell you, you can smell when someone down the street is having it. My parents had it at home for midsummer once and the smell lingered in the house for about three days after. It's on a whole different level.
It's like... relatively prevalent. You wouldn't just have it for a random Tuesday dinner though, it's more of a thing you have like once in the summer when the whole family gets together, and then there will be plenty of other food options so those who don't want to eat it can just have something else (but obviously we will all smell it, even if precautions are taken to reduce it lol)

I love how Surströmming is so wretched the can actually spits at Dan when Arin opens it. Even as a Swede, I’ve never actually smelt it but the smell is by all accounts indescribable.
As a Swede I feel I should clarify that surströmming is Not opened inside and is usually left to air out before eating (with other stuff). Eating it fresh out of the can is actually insane.
Yeah, isn't it supposed to be opened underwater first as well? This feels kind of similar to when people try Vegemite by eating a spoonful instead of putting a thin layer on toast with butter or just chomping on a century egg instead of mixing it into a bowl of rice. There's a sort of process. A ritual even.
The last one is traditionally opened under water.
