Detroit 8.2L diesel - "The Fuel Pincher"

Any of you fine folks have experience with this engine? More specifically, I'm looking for the specialized tools that are for working on the fuel system. To buy or borrow, whatever suits.

I didn't see your dash. I have a dash cluster for that truck that includes. Tach, psi, fuel, voltage, etc. Its been sitting on the shelf for 25 years. If you want it its yours.

K this will start a a whole lot of feedback. Just a suggestion and great for multiple videos plus it will be fun. 6bt swap. Dump the Detroit and upgrade, rear axle ratio might be an issue. I learned how to drive on a 6v71. Had a few 8v92's in the fleet. Not a good design, fuel burners and spendy to work on.

Jon, I googled the problem with your truck. Yes it said fuel pump could be one issue. But it also added that the O-rings on the injectors could also be the problem and the fuel lines could have cracks that could allow fuel into the oil pan.

I had to sub to see what the problem is.

Haha. Not my intent, but thank you!

I went back and watched some of your videos back when you bought the truck and you mentioned getting fuel in the oil. That motor will have unit injectors under the valve covers, they should have small fuel lines going to them. I will be willing to bet it least one of those lines is loose or cracked. You should be able to check and or tighten them without to much work. The other thing you can check is the fuel pump, it may be leaking into the motor. This motor doesn't use an injector pump, it has a fuel pump to supply fuel to the injector, and the injectors are camshaft operated. There is a governor unit that controls the fuel to the injectors, it should have a rod coming from the Governor housing into each head to operate the rack. Very similar to the way the 2-Stroke Detroit's work. I was a Truck and Diesel Equipment mechanic for about 20 years. My knowledge of this motor is limited because they were not very popular, and not many were around. I only remember working on 2 trucks with this motor and I never was into the motors of either of them. And both were in Ford Trucks. HAHAHA

I hate to even suggest this.....but is there any conceivable way to swap a 4-71 in there? HP would be nearly the same even without a turbo and the truck would basically become an heirloom......after you finished fighting the brake demons and the electrical demons and the power steering demons and the miscellaneous sub-gremlins. You know what....maybe don't do that.

The 4-71 would be way too tall to fit in the frame. From the factory about the only motor options would 366 or 427 Truck Gasoline motors and maybe the 3208 Cat motor. The 4-71 wouldn't have enough RPM to be able be do much. You also would have to consider the rear axle ratio. The 8.2 would have a rated RPM of around 3000, and the 4-71 about 2300.

If you can't find somebody to fix it, a good replacement would be a 3208 Cat motor, at least you can get parts for them. You may be able to find one that was build just for your truck.

There are several problems with the 8.2 DD motor. As I mentioned before they are famous for blowing Head Gaskets. The top of the block is open to the water jacket. the motor has no cylinder liners, and each cylinder only has 4 head bolts instead of 6. GM made about 60,000 extra motors as replacement motors but they are mostly gone. These are very similar to the 2-stoke motors and the overhead uses same of the same parts. This is one of those engines you don't walk away from you run away from.

Yeah, I’m aware. But it’s the engine in my dump truck. Now that I already own it I’m going to try and do some work on it.

Bus grease monkeys are near you, specializing in DD

Pat Benner · May 26, 2026

I believe Bus grease monkey is located in West Virginia.

The guy at Diesel Creek (YouTube) is an expert in these engines.

He is very knowledgeable with the 2 stroke detroits, but this is a different animal. I've never seen him work on an 8.2L, which is a 4 stroke and in many ways is its own unique design.

There are 2 YouTube channels I would recommend for help would be Ol2stroker, and Bus Grease Monkey.

That motor was NOT a very good design, they were a throw away motor. I believe the use the same timing pins as the 2-Stroke Detroit Diesels used. But I Don't know which pins was used. There were a couple of different ones. The biggest problem with the motor were head gaskets.

Have you tried asking DieselCreek? Seems up his alley.

F
FarmCraft101 · May 25, 2026

He works on the 2 stroke Detroits a lot, but I've never seen him work on an 8.2. They are very different animals. I wish it had a 2 stroker in it, because by comparison the engine I have is a piece of junk! lol.
