"Noirvember" What Is Film Noir? The term “film noir” has been a subject of fascination and study (and debate) amongst cinephiles since its inception. The history of the genre dates back to the 1930s and 1940s, originating from a blend of American crime dramas and French poetic realism, as well as German Expressionist cinema. This period, known as the classic era of film noir (1940-1950), introduced audiences to a new form of storytelling that was unconventional and dark, both in narrative and visual style. The debate over whether film noir is a distinct genre or a stylistic approach persists. However, its identifiable characteristics — low-key lighting, unbalanced compositions, themes of crime and moral ambiguity, and the presence of elements such as the femme fatale and the cynical detective — suggest a specific, though flexible, framework that influences both the narrative and visual aspects of these films. Some of the better ones to help getting started: Laura (1944) Shadow of a Doubt (1943) The Third Man (1949) The Maltese Falcon (1941) Sunset Boulevard (1950) Sweet Smell of Success (1957) Strangers on a Train (1951) Double Indemnity (1944) Touch of Evil (1958) Notorious (1946) In a Lonely Place (1950) The Big Sleep (1946) White Heat (1949) Out of the Past (1947) The Night of the Hunter (1955) The Killers (1946) Mildred Pierce (1945) Spellbound (1945) The Harder They Fall (1956) The Strange Love of Martha Ivers (1946) The Blue Dahlia (1946) Suddenly (1954) All Through the Night (1942) The Big Clock (1948) Key Largo (1948) The Stranger (1946) Suspicion (1941) To Have and Have Not (1944) I Want to Live! (1958) The Wrong Man (1956) High Sierra (1941) The Treasure of the Sierra Madre (1948) They Drive by Night (1940) Dark Passage (1947) The Postman Always Rings Twice (1946) The Enforcer (1951) D.O.A. (1949) Witness for the Prosecution (1957) Detour (1945)

Looking forward to Buddy, Sleeping Beauty and Bring Her Back
After 15 years of thinking I was too good for it, I finally started watching Vampire Diaries. Now I feel compelled to put it in everyone's head. Let's all vote for Vampire Diaries guys.
So excited for this month! Especially Widow’s Bay and Night at the Museum! Just want to put this out there, but please consider watching East of Eden! Just came out on Netflix, it’s a beautiful and heartbreaking story of intergenerational and personal trauma, choices, nature vs nurture, etc. Absolutely blown away by everyone’s performances but especially Florence Pugh’s, and the cinematography depicting late 19th century/early 20th century America is just breathtaking.
Are we getting the Spider-Man brand new day reaction?
I am all here for MHA / anime, Game of Thrones and Black Mirror! :D I know you are already busy as hell, but just saying: it would be sooooo cool if maybe in the future you could do two anime slots per week. (I really want to see you react to Monster, but it's still quite a way to go for that)
spider-man brand new day??
No
I can’t believe you guys are skipping DARK on Netflix once again. That show was MADE for you guys! I can’t figure out why it keeps getting past over. 😫

Heck ya!! Love that you are checking both animated and live action Sleeping Beauty-one of the few live actions that did very well. You guys are gonna love Night at the Museum triology! Its one of the few where the casts actually match the historical people, well except in the 3rd which that was just a straight up cameo fan service but well loved fan service. Selena oh you guys gonna make us cry arent ya.
