FoundryVTT V14 - Update Plans

As V14 stable approaches, here is an overview of the update plans for my modules. The goal is to have everything updated within 2 weeks of the Stable 1 release, with most modules ready within the first week. A post tracking progress per module is availeble on the discord channel. Generally speaking, everything will be updated by the end of April.

⚠️ Important: It is NOT recommended to update until all modules have been updated. Once everything is up to date, there will be a follow up post!

3D Canvas

3D Canvas will become free permanently to celebrate the retirement of Levels. A dedicated post will follow when this goes live with more details.

Retired Modules

The following modules will be retired in V14 as their functionality is now part of core Foundry VTT:

  • Wall Height (replaced by core Scene Levels)

  • Levels (replaced by core Scene Levels)

  • Tile Sort (replaced by the Placeables sidebar)

About the Levels & Wall Height Transition

I'm aware that many of you have questions about what will happen to your Levels-based scenes, here is the gist: The Levels module itself will become mostly a migration tool with some leftover features for easier transition. The migration is not 1:1, so some manual adjustments may be needed on more complex scenes. Levels tiles with "Block Sight and Movement" will continue to work , but you will eventually need to transition to Regions and the Define Surface behavior as tiles are not used in the Core Scene Levels to do any kind of vision or movement blocking. Wall Height is replaced by level-scoped elevation rather than per-wall top and bottom values. The Wall Height module itself will do nothing in V14 and can be removed .

So using v14's 'inbuilt' levels.. it doesn't seem to have a lot of stuff that we are used to with yours.. wall heights for example are basically still full height across the entire level that your on yours were setable allowing for a partial wall your level system was aware of the actors heights, and didn't require us to do a manual transition between them, we could just go hey actors at elevation 14 and levels is aware of it.. foundries new system... as far as i can see isn't. I honestly think there's still functionality from 'levels' that could be transferred.. and really wish they'd looked more at how the most used '3D' scene module did things a little more.. I know its only been out a day or so and it'll evolve but yeah I've been trying to recreate a few scenes that in levels was 'easy' do x, have actor change height' worked.. It's weird, they have elevation in there.. but then entire systems that seem to take it into account.

I very much agree. I'm glad Foundry is adding cool features but I don't understand why it can't at least make half walls. I can't set token height. Everything is just off or on. I really hope they work on the levels more.

End of an era... Well, it will be when I'm finally ready to upgrade to v14, you know, around the time v15 is released.
