Happy 4th of July!
[Updates at the bottom of the post]
Even if you're not in the States, now you can have your very own fireworks!!! Just use your rocket launcher, or your plasma gun, or judiciously apply some amount of chainsaw to the demons until fireworks pop out of their chests []-D
Yes, you guessed right: v2607.4.2 Early Access of the R.E.A.L. VR framework supports https://store.steampowered.com/app/379720/DOOM/ also affectionately known to most players as DOOM (2016)!
I won't lie to you: it's gonna be a carnage, and it's gonna be fast, and brutal, and relentless, and all of that is gonna happen RIGHT IN YOUR FACE. Please don't choose this game if this is one of your first experiences in VR, haha.
I've fallen behind on tracking CD https://store.steampowered.com/app/3321460/Crimson_Desert/ because every time I have a new release ready for testing they seem to put out another patch. Now with v2607.4.2 Early Access you can safely update the game to their newest 1.13.00 version, which I hope will last at least until tomorrow morning.
And speaking of brutal and fast carnage: please be sure to check out the amazing new VR conversion released by Flat2VR Studios and Mutar!!
https://store.steampowered.com/app/3844750/FlatOut_4_Total_Insanity_VR/
I have no affiliation with them, other than the fact they've always been very supportive of my work, but please, please, please for the love of God and all things holy and 3D, just buy the game! It's fun, it's one of the very few arcade racing games (not sims) that we have in VR, and they really knocked it out of the park by even releasing a PS VR 2 version!
But even more importantly, it's everything we as a community always asked from VR titles. The conversion is competently written by people who really understand how VR works and what the strong and weak points of the medium are. It's not a sloppy, half-assed port by some publisher who is not really interested in VR and just wants to cash out on every possible niche. It even supports motion controls. It has a very low price point. The developers listen to their user base and immediately implemented requests like compatibility with wheel controllers.
Yet (let me tell you, this saddens me to no end), the game is getting almost no coverage from the press and from YouTubers :-(
And though I have no official data on its sales and would be very happy to be proven wrong, SteamCharts lists it as having about 5 players worldwide (!) during the last month. In other words, nobody is buying it, and those few who have bought it are not playing it or talking about it.
What gives? When CDPR pulled their stunt on my supporter base, demanding immediate removal of Cyberpunk 2077 from my framework and persistently refusing to get into any kind of licensing agreement with me so that one of the most widely loved VR conversions on the Internet could continue to exist, thousands of VR enthusiasts screamed bloody murder and buried me under every possible insult/meme/verbal attack you can think of, and then some. It was all my fault.
Mods need to be free, they said. I should be sued into oblivion. I should be asking for donations, not support, because the proper way to do this kind of stuff is to get into an agreement with the publisher. And with motion controls! Otherwise it's utter crap.
Flat2VR did it the proper way, and I 100% side with them.
Yet the VR community is not buying the game and playing it?!? YouTubers who pretend to be about VR are not even covering the release? What is WRONG with you people? Put your money and your time where your mouth is. Instead of always whining and asking for more free stuff, show some support to the developers who are actually turning your dreams into reality. Okay, "virtual" reality, but you know what I mean []-)
This might sound like a rant, and people who are dead set against me will no doubt read it as further confirmation that I'm a clown. I don't care about that. But what I care about is VR not just surviving, but thriving as an artistic medium and a gaming paradigm, and that cannot happen if the fans don't pull together and show some appreciation and support for the people who share that same ideal.
Because if you don't have $20 to invest into rewarding and recognizing the brilliant work of both coders and business developers who worked their asses off to make a VR title as close to perfection as can humanly be, or if you have a public presence and cannot be bothered to yell from every rooftop until the title gets the public recognition it deserves and other publishers begin to feel the pressure to put out something similar themselves... if you are a "fan" and decide not to do any of those things, then you should not go around complaining that VR is dead. You are actively contributing to killing it.
Please don't do that. Don't kill it. It's already on extended life support. Don't pull the plug on it. I love it dearly. You love it. We love it. Don't kill it, please.
And don't hide behind the silliness of "mods must be free". This is not a mod. FlatOut 4 Total Insanity VR is a full-fledged honest-to-God conversion. You don't like my business model? Fine, here's a different one. Go for it. Show the world that you care. Not just on X and Reddit where your words just circle down into a perpetual, self-referencing, AI-spun whirlpool of doom. Use your real money and make your actions count in the real world. One way or the other, there must be a business model for VR to continue to exist.
[Update July 5. INDY: Release v2607.5.2 early access fixes INDY's black screen at startup.
ASW: The R.E.A.L. VR framework automatically disables Asynchronous Space Warp when available, because ASW is not compatible with alternate eye rendering and it causes more judder. I don't have any use cases where ASW offers benefits with R.E.A.L., but in case you want to suppress this automatic disabling for some reason, you can now add a NoAutoDisableASW=1 line to the [RVR] section of the .ini file. Make sure you know what you're doing if you change this setting: it is only meant for power users, and most players should be fine with the default behavior.]

I've never really gotten into steam mods but if i wanted to, do they play nice with Luke Ross mod?
Probably, depending on what they mod. What game?
Flatoutvr best arcade course game ever. Quality of this vr mod is insane. Really well done. Flat2VR thanks a lot !
Any chance for Black Flag Resync ?
Luke/Brandon, I'm trying First Light in RealVR and it looks really great, thank you for your work on this game, so fast after release! I had one question about the main HUD, I'm playing the game on my TV, with Oneup3's VRto3D, and strangely unlike any other of the many RealVR games I've tried First Light's main menu is still too large to fit on my screen, even when draging the slider all the way to the left (value 0.5). It also impacts the gameplay HUD , for example the objectives on the side of the screen. Any idea what I could do to make it smaller, beyond the default slider value? Could this be related to some other game setting, that I could try changing? Does not seem to react to resolution changes?
Did you look in the game options? Did you try the gamepad shortcut yet, in case it helps in one state or another?
Doom the dark ages stopped working after yesterday update
I'll definitely buy it, even if I have very little time( I'm completely addicted to C.D!), 20 euros is nothing! And that's really important. .......I've been pretty harsh in my comments on certain YouTubers, especially two Italian channels, and in particular one who criticized your Cyberpunk framework because YOU COULDN'T USE CONTROLLERS!!!!....Luke, they are the clowns.... and, lo and behold, both channels changed their names and even dropped the word "VR" because they realized that focusing solely on virtual reality wasn't generating enough views (and therefore money). Yet, these people have the nerve to criticize you for having a Patreon?......Clowns! p.s. I noticed that my subscription has expired but I will renew it and do the annual one YOU DESERVE IT!
Best Open world Racing games Forza Horizon 4 and 5 in VR needs to happen (Hopeful) After playing Flatout 4 in VR with some friends... it was quite a Joy to play, so fully interactive, Flat2VR done it right! Now we cant get enough and want more Racing games in VR!
He tried 6 and couldn't work on it without it crashing, so probably not.
I totally understand your frustration. Whenever there is a Flat2VR community commercial game I just buy it without questions. I have a feeling that this home-grown community will be holding the tent pools for VR over the next 5 years until hardware prices drop, so everyone involved deserves our support. But your work is so appreciated. It's got me as excited for gaming as when I bought my PS1 on launch day many years ago. Anyways, I just purchased a Pimax Dream Air SLAM using the SBoys3 driver and tested about 40 or so games using your framework. Interesting, all of them functioned without issues (and look gorgeous) except for all 3 Spiderman games. I tried them on PSVR2 - also failed. They don't crash, but the VR doesn't seem to hook. But they did work with my Vive XR Elite using Virtual Desktop. Just wondering if anyone else noticed this issue, or perhaps is something unique about my system. Thanks again.
Why don't you make a VR version for games that are played by thousands of players daily and 300,000 monthly like Sea of Thieves?
Crimson Desert is very popular like that :)
have you seen the flatout 4 steam reviews and youtube reviews of the regular flat-game version from 9 years ago?...spolier, it's not well received. just because something gets made into vr, does not mean that we'll go buy it like mindless sheep. they collaborated on a badly received game from 9 years ago, why would it be received well now? if they manage a collaboration with a game people love, then they'll get the sales
Like The Witcher 3
Purchased! Flat2VR have you to thank for that. Flat2VR also did "Out of Sight VR". There are some seriously talented people involved in Flat2VR. Recent to come out of that group is an expanded dll for UEVR that converts Silent Hill F to VR. Most people had given up on it, it seemed the game simply wasnt going to work. But no, they did it. Again
I bought Total Insanity VR just this second. Thanks for the hint.
Can u buy the game? It only let me wishlist it on steam. i wanna buy it
Man all I want to do is shout VR to the rooftops!! Sometimes it feels like only the rooftops would hear me tho. I’m really glad the thing with CDPR didn’t get to you and your staying true to your passion!
I bought flat out day 1. I currently lost in Crimson desert but I bought it anyways just to support
Any chance you could do Forza Horizon 4 & 5. You wouldn't have to worry about game updates at least. Naluluna has done a great job on FH6 and left me wondering if it was possible as FH6 in Vr is one of the best vr experiences I'm having/ had for a long time. Cheers 🍻
You are so right. I buy every good VR game that interests me a bit just to support the devs because I want to support VR. I was shocked when I read that Of Lies and Rain has just 4000 copies sold at one point. It's a f***in great game and so is Reach and it's not sold. Everybody wants VR to live but nobody is supporting the devs. I have so many games I sadly cannot play all of them, so EXD and Wraith of the Ruin for example are sitting in my library and I have only bareley time to play them but these are great titles too and I supported the devs with my money. I wish more people do this.
I hope you will also complete the KCD series. KCD1 looks just as good as KCD2.
Hi Luke I absolutely love your work. But right now, I am having aspect ratio issue on Apple Vision Pro over ALVR with the Real VR. Currently, Apple Vision Pro can only run REAL VR using ALVR. And ALVR on AVP does not work over OpenXR layer for REAL VR due to some bug that has been there for two years (ALVR dev said its a REAL VR problem), and I have to use the legacy OpenVR runtime. With OpenVR, I am limited to an aspect ratio roughly around 1.47 : 1 and not adjustable. This is obviously not the real aspect ratio the Apple Vision Pro display delivers (1.14 ~ 1.25 : 1). So basically, I am wasting unnecessary computation on drawing parts that will never be viewed on the screen, and this is significant for high resolution headset like AVP. At 1.47 : 1, game UI also scales wrong and I need to manually switch to flat to pass certain scenes in DS2 and 007 as UI does not render in readable state. In this case, I have tried everything I can for workarounds. I have properly set the SteamVR configuration, ALVR streaming resolution, manually tunning REAL config, etc., but after weeks of testing, none of it works for me. In ALVR discord, I found many others having same problem, but no one have figured out a solution yet since last year. If you need assistance debugging this problem, I am glad to help.
I have bought Flatout VR at launch, It's so fun!!! Thanks for Doom Luke , you are amazing.
I bought flatout as soon as I knew it released and it is good! Also thanks for always adding new games and keeping up on updates for prior ones. Im still playing CD and 007 but will pick doom up on sale and play later! Loved the other 2 dooms through your framework! This community needs to all support each other, Preydogs REframework and UEVR are also great tools, I donate to him when I have extra money as I tend to find your framework eaiser to run and im not high income but I try to support the community the most I can! Been a paying sub to you for well over a year now and no regrets at all ❤️
"about 5 players worldwide (!) during the last month." Yeah, but even the flat version only had 24 players worldwide last month and an all-time peak of 64 players globally. Maybe that’s also because the game just isn’t that good. You should probably read the reviews. What does that tell us? The game came out in 2017, and those numbers already show how well it was received by players. With so few players in VR, that was kind of to be expected. I always wonder why Flat2VR picks games like this. I get that there may not be that many developers interested, but then you shouldn’t be surprised by the outcome. Personally, I’d much rather see completely different games get a VR option. I know that’s not really possible through official channels. That said, I really think it’s great to support this project, but maybe Flat2VR should try to convince developers of games that are still in development to include a VR mode directly in their flat version. That way, when the game releases, you can play it in VR right away. Then you wouldn’t have two separate versions, just one that also supports VR, and you could ride the release hype with the VR option as well. Again, I really like the initiative, but I have to say I feel quite strongly addressed when it comes to supporting official VR games more. The thing is, I just can’t. I can’t buy this game just to support Flat2VR, VR studios, or VR in general. I mainly use my VR headset for UEVR, Luke Ross mods, Preydog’s RE mods, Praydog’s No More Flat mods, and various other mods so I can play games I actually find interesting and good in VR. In my opinion, VR developers very often miss the interests and tastes of many gamers. That’s a problem VR has had from the very beginning. Maybe that’s something worth discussing.
I'd play it more, but there are so many games to choose from at the moment in VR that I want to finish first. When people say there aren't any VR games, they're obviously not looking. Stuck on forefront at the moment
Cant find v2607.4.2 to download.
The latest early access version is always at https://www.patreon.com/realvr/posts/early-access-152734106 You should also have received an email notification :-)
I will be purchasing on my Psvr2, still gets a lot of use PS5 aces of thunder is awesome too . I have to say you have made my day however with doom. Thanks Luke for all the great work , been waiting for this one in a while 😍
I had a few excuses not to buy that one: 1) It's in EA. 99% of EA games I own I barely played until the full release anyway. I like the idea, but I just can't get into EA games, knowing that it'll have much more content later and I'm just spoiling it with an unfinished product. 2) My racing "rig" is currently under construction and I just can't find the time to assemble everything as I want. 3) The game is quite old, while I'm a big fan of the series (second one is my favorite), I just have much more options even in VR (I just can't get enough of Dirt Rally 2.0 with their native VR support, even after hundreds of hours) and I rarely play racing games, so I'm very picky. But you know what? Screw it, just bought it, 6th monthly player coming online now! With a controller for now, but my first experience with the series was actually on KB+M, so that's already an upgrade! As a bonus, Mutar (also known as NoMoreFlat, one of the coolest VR modders out there, whom I also support here on Patreon) was involved in the development and as I understood he gets a share in sales. So indeed, by buying this game you support the whole VR world, let's keep it going, now that Luke brought it up there just can be no excuses :D And besides, I only heard positive things about this game anyway!
To me it looks like Flatout 4 Total Insanity VR got a huge coverage. Only on YouTube it got more than 1 milion views. IGN, Play Station, Beardo and many other youtubers showcased it. Definitely a lot more coverage than Crimson Desert VR. And now there is elevated interest to a new mod for Cyberpunk 2077 in VR with hand controllers.
Okay your completely right so I just bought Total Insanity VR ^^
Definitely trying Doom, Eternal is already amazing in VR. As for Flatout, bought it on day one even though don't really like the original game (prefer sim), it's a fantastic conversion and way more fun in VR
