Some insight from an actor who's worked on closed sets; In terms of technicalities for filming; there was only one intimacy coordinator, there usually is only one. Their job is extremely important for mental and physical safety of the actor as well as their whole job being to read and watch the scenes as they are being performed to aid in directing the actors on whether it seems realistic and has the energy and portrayal that the director wants. Sex and intimacy scenes are very, very detailed and heavily scripted and often rehearsed to make sure that it is safe and consensual for the actors so that they know exactly what is going to happen. On the other side, an intimacy coordinator's job also includes being in charge of modesty and props. They hold all the props and garments needed for the shots the director wants; here for example Hudson Williams (Shane) and Connor Storrie (Ilya) were both wearing "cock socks" which is essentially a drawstring sock or pouch that ties around the base of the actor's penis and testicles so that no contact is made between actors during filming. By the standard of both ACTRA (Canada) and SAG-AFTRA (USA), intimacy coordinators are required to be on hand for any union set that has any form of intimate scenes. It is a fairly new job but very important.

They call hockey wives=wags, I think he meant that his family is the first one to have him over, its very normal to hang out with teammates and he probably haven’t been doing that

Ilya has a lot to lose if he’s caught or comes out he could potentially be jailed, he’d basically be shunned by the entire country of Russia

I hated to see Shane hurt during the figure skating scene, but I try to keep in mind that Ilya’s aggression was not meant to be cruel.. Shane was just told very clearly in the previous scene that In Russia, homosexuality carries the risk of genuine physical danger, yet he still approaches Ilya in a very obvious manner. Ilya is understandably hyper-vigilant about their safety and demands space three separate times and Shane fails to read the subtext or respect the verbal warnings. When Shane said not here during the shower scene in Episode 1 Ilya stopped immediately. Ilya simply needed that same level of respect in return. Shane’s difficulty reading the situation may be linked to him being on the spectrum (as per the author), but it doesn't change the fact that Ilya was defending a necessary safety boundary. However, saying all that it is heartbreaking that he ghostied Shane for 6 months. I understand the reasoning behind it, but without communication Shane certainly doesn't.

For the big jumps in time, since they play on different teams and the story is mainly about them together, it makes sense. These players play around 80 games each season and they move to different cities every few days. That's why Ilya and Shane see each other only every few months. We started in 2008 and both of them were 17-18 years old. Yes, situation in Russia up until now is not good when it comes to the lgbt comunity. Of course, it was worse back then. You could go to jail. If Ilya was to come out, he would probably not be able to visit his family again. I honestly love that the show talks about this so much. I don't know if you missed it but at the end of episode 1 when they were talking outside at the after party, Ilya said to Shane "I'm going home in 3 days" as if trying to give Shane a little hint for his bad mood. Shane doesn't get it tho cuz' he has no idea about the situation in Russia and how much Ilya actually doesn't like it there. In the second episode, when Shane comes to Ilya during the figure skating, it seems like Ilya tries to protect both of them. Of course, he is angry that they lost a game and his father is mad at him but also doesn't want to put Shane and himself in danger in case someone saw them up there. It was common that they would put spies to go and follow people around to find any kind of illegal activity. Especially famous people like Rozanov. It's not mentioned in the show but in the books, Shane is on the spectrum. You can see it in tiny little things he does. Him folding his clothes when getting undressed, his kinda monotone voice when he speaks, or the way he only drinks ginger ale, being called "not the most sociable", having the highest hockey IQ and being super focused, etc. It's very subtle but it's there. The actor Hudson Williams acted it out perfectly and based his portrayal on his own dad who is also autistic. Connor Storrie (Ilya Rozanov) learned Russian after being casted for the show which was like 1-2 weeks before they started filming and studied with a tutor for 4 hours every day. His Russian gets better each episode. Episode 2, before the award show, Ilya had actually a panic attack in the bathroom. Poor baby. For the ending of episode 2, I love how Shane really tries to talk to Ilya about Russia and tries to understand more about Ilya's situation. Unfortunately, Ilya is not a guy who opens up easily about his personal life and feelings. He pushes Shane away because he is just not ready to talk about it. Russia is home, even tho he hates it there. It's something that he's known his whole life so the thought of "oh, maybe I don't need to go there every summer, maybe I can choose myself and my peace" is very foreign to him.

I'm really sorry if I'm being annoying by commenting so much! In 2008, if a a prominent hockey star like Ilya Rozanov was found to be gay he would face severe social stigma, condemnation, discrimination, and career ruin. There would be a genuine threat not only to his professional life, but also his personal safety. Violence against the LGBTQ+ community was/is very prominent in Russia. To make matters even worse, the authorities did not take action to protect the LGBTQ community and the government provided no legal recourse .While the federal "gay propaganda" law was not enacted until 2013, variations were beginning to emerge proving that the societal atmosphere in Russia was and continues to be intensely homophobic.

The Montreal Metros (Shane ) and Boston Raiders (Ilya) only face each other a few times a year in regular season games, however, opportunities for Shane and Ilya to meet also arise during post-season games, tournaments, and official award ceremonies. Yes, professional hockey players represent their home countries in major international tournaments) as well as other events and competition beyond their regular team.

Ilya, you do everything to raise the tension with Shane on purpose. You're such a tart, and I grew to love you over what felt like many episodes. Alexei is absolutely detestable, I feel bad for his crying baby in the background. Get a job. What I'd love to see is Svetlana, Ilya's bestie and Shane's mom talk about hockey.
